As a relatively recent immigrant from SA, I curious about how track days are conducted and how much they cost.

I'm in Melbourne with Sandown being the closest to me (and Phillip Island not too far).

Now in SA you pitched up on a Sunday for a 9.00 am briefing with a helmet, long pants and sleeves, covered shoes and about $30 and off you went. The marshalls teneded to divide the sessions between fast and slow cars - fast being track modded stuff, the odd race car getting a shake down and anything from a well driven BMW 330i and up. Plonkers in Diablos tootling around at 80 got knocked back into the slow car group! biggrin

I did a few laps with some mates in the VW club, including an ex-championship winner, read the track notes that had helpfully been put together by the Lotus 7 club and went out and had several good times in a Golf.

How does it work here?

(This is all propositional - I'm looking to get something for about $20k in six months or so which should be good for the odd track day. Possible choices include BA XR8, Monaro CV8, VY/VZ SS, Focus ST170, Golf 4 GTI or Bora V5, or even a banger Audi A3/A4 1.8T. Any need to buy a specific car to join a specific club?)

Mmmm, that looks expensive with a focus on professional instruction - I'm looking for a more entry level low key event. Given the Putin-esque approach to traffic enforcement here, perhaps I'm hoping for too much?

I kinda had visions of a Ford or Holden club informal track day where joe average gets a chance to stretch the legs on his V8, hatch, etc.

Start at www.cams.com.au and then talk to the circuit directly.

I cant speak for the circuits in other states but here in Perth you generally need to be a member of a CAMS club for a start. The trackdays in SA seem to be pretty similar to what happens here.
