visiting and traveling around
Discussion
Me and a friend want to visit Australia from the UK.
I am starting to do some research but wanted to ask some piston headers! I think because of time (about 3 weeks) and money we will only be able to do the south east corner. Melbourne to Sydney maybe as far as Brisbane. I fancy the idea of a motor home is this a good way of doing it? Are there other good overland travel options - trains etc. Are there plenty of campsites and places that night stopping is permitted (at a reasonable cost of course!!!)? I assume finding fuel stations and driving them in the towns is not too much of a problem? Any recommendations car related or otherwise would be good too!
Thanks all
Joe

Yeah, campervan could be a good way to see a fair bit of the coast in that sort of time.
The whole East coast is pretty densely populated with towns not all that far apart so you'll have no trouble with getting fuel, and I don't see you have much in the way of issues fitting a standard size van around on the roads. Just watch out for the quality of Australian driving - it's dreadful.
Most of the rental companies will allow you to do a one way hire so a 3 week trip from Melbourne to Brisbane would likely be a great way to see the place with enough time for a few days stop in all the major locations and not too much of a rush inbetween.
http://www.maui.com.au/ and http://www.britz.com.au are the two main hire companies i think.

the major problem with wicked is their campers are 'very individual' hand painted with murals and slogans- and are far from politically correct!!!!!
it brightens up your day when driving round Brisbane watching people get upset at what is written on the rear of some vans!
If you get a chance make sure you feed the dolphins at Tangalooma (1/2 hour from Brisbane by cat, not cheap but makes a nice break, stay overnight). Also Indy is fun if you are here next month (Surfers Paradise).
