Hi all, long time PH lurker, first time poster looking for some advice if you would be so kind.

I am looking to move over to Sydney towards the end of the year (Dec) with the Mrs for approx 18-24 months or longer if we are really taken with the place.

Job is already secured verbally, just waiting on final written offer confirmation in the post which should be here this week. Visa is part of the job so no worries there either

My car (E46 M3 Cab 2002) will be coming with me and I think I am pretty much up to speed on the ins and outs of bringing it over thanks to Kevin's great post here: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I do have a few more general questions however:
1) While looking at places to live I have researched according to our ideal criteria of 2/3 bed on or near the beach with garage for the M. Dining, Bars and shops within walking distance but not really clubs and serious rowdiness. I have come up with Manly, Fairlight, Bronte and Tamarama in terms of locations but was wondering if I am missing anything here? Local views on alternative locations that fit the bill would be great if possible.

2) When importing the car over I know I wont be able to get permission from the Oz authorities until I have an address to send it to in Sydney so I guess its just a case of coming over, finding a place and then the car follows, right? anything i can do to speed this up so the car arrives earlier ie register it as being sent it to a mates house who already lives in Sydney?

3) Finally it would just be great to get some general advice on life in Sydney and things to think about/consider while I have time to plan. Anything that you wish someone had told you before you had arrived etc

I intend to be on here until I get to Oz and beyond so hopefully will get to know some of you Sydney PH'ers and we can sort out a bit of a meet

Thanks for any wisdom that you may be able to share!

Depends where you will be working, Sydney is a bloody big place and if driving some distance to work the eastern suburbs or the manly area can be hard to get in and out of.

If working in the CBD public transport is your friend.

Its going to be CBD so fine with public transport (bus / ferry etc). Dont want to have to travel more than 30 mins each way if I can help it.

Might be able to help with this. I live in Manly and work in CBD. Travel time, inc walk to wharf and into/from CBD is about an hour each way. Takes 15mins less by Jetcat.

I've tried all those suburbs you mentioned and this was the one that works for me. Having said that, I'll be moving a bit further up the Beaches as I can't afford to buy the bigger place I need and still be within 5-10min walk of Manly Wharf. Many people drive/ride to Manly for the ferry to work. I also cycle into the city - about 16km each way.

One thing is for certain - it ain't cheap. Good 2-bed units within a km or two to the beach will be about $600/week to rent or $750k-$900k to buy. Beer is about $7-$8 a pint in pubs or around $10 pint in bars.

Without sounding negative... if you only want to travel 30 mins, stick to water or rail.. Traffic is shocking in ruch hour regardless of bus lanes you'll still get stuck in it!

What about Woolloomooloo, Darlinghurst, Bondi, Paddington or Surry Hills.. might be a better option... then there is North Sydney which is only a short walk to either the station or McMahons Point ferry. You'll get traffic anywhere and if there is an accident, Sydney stops!

Check out a suburb called Harbord/Freshwater (name change recently to freshwater)

sis has a place there with water view, 2 bed, carport, townhouse, renovated for 480AU a week. Nice spot 15 minutes walk to Manly

Many thanks for all the replies guys.

Plan is not to drive to work if i can help it for the reasons mentioned above, so ferry or public transport will be the the weapon of choice. Car will come out on the weekend so underground parking or a garage will be important in the property search.

I have been checking the areas mentioned above, a few undiscovered gems in there so thanks again.

Really looking forward to the move, its going to be a very frustrating wait i can tell

Melbourne gets my vote, now closely followed by Fremantle!

About the only place I would chose to live in Sydney, BTW I will be in town on Thursday thru Saturday if you are about for a beer, staying at a hotel close to Circular Quay. Already planning on meeting a couple of people from the Aussie Bank I used to work for...

PS I think the beach at Manly is far better than Bondi!

A bit of hijacking here.

I'm also coming out but not until late next year. The GF has secured a job at westmeade Hospital so I'll be looking at moving to west Sydney. A friend of mine will be moving out next Feb and he will be looking at a place in Yowi bay or around that way he is looking at a place upto (1500pw, which will be nice for us as we will be moving in with him for the short term). My question is: what is a good western suburb for renting a place between 400-500pw, when my mate gets fed up with us smile (must have parking for the Noble).
