As some of you may know, i'm coming out to Australia for a year in October.
The farm i'm working on has just dropped the bombshell that i need a car yikes

So the budget is ~$3000 AUD, it needs to be bought in perth as it's being driven to esperance by me!...

So the essentials:
Air-con
V8 (or bigger)

Well, i cant fit the bill entirely but i have a 1993 Mitsubishi Magna TR (2.4l 4 Cyl of magic) for sale to be got rid of in October at a date suitable to the buyer. Its got 240,000km's, auto, silver, ice cold aircon, newish tyres, serviced 3 months ago Rego (road tax, mot and mandatory 3rd party insurance which is all you legally need) on it that runs out in March (at which point you just renew it, no tests or anything, dead simple).

$1000.

Not a V8 but will get you to Esperance and back a fair few times. I'm only selling as i train it to work every day.

Might be worth talking to the farm owners to find out what the roads are like in the area - some farms can only be reached by long stretches of rough dirt so you might want to factor that into the choice of vehicle.

The used car market is dire at the moment, so you should be able to get something reasonable for $3-4k, probably also worth talking to a few insurers and seeing which ones will recognise overseas no claims discounts, otherwise you might get left with a big hole in your budget.

A V8 is all well and good but for that budget your probably going to end up with something with a narsty, slipping 3 speed auto behind it and twelfty million KMS on it.

There was a big issue here with the LS1 V8 (found in Holdens) eating its own internals and washing it down with all its oil, I know Holden was replacing engines under warranty even if they were not faulty but obviously not all cars will have been done.

Older V8's will drink great big gobs of fuel.....just like the US fuel used to be stupidly cheap here so there was no real motivation for the manufacturers to produce anything clean or fuel efficient.

Also 98RON is not always readily available outside of the larger towns...not sure hoe the older V8's go with 91RON especially if its a hot day.

Definately go for A/C, Perth gets hot as hell though it will be a good amount cooler in Esperance.
Also as mentioned find out if your going to need to drive far off road.

Just spotted this thread, in pretty much the same situation myself, landing in Perth on Monday. Was gonna look around a few car dealers for a cheap part-ex they don't want.

Also try trawling the dealerships in Victoria Park...drive all the way along Albany Highway and there are dozens and dozens of used car places. Some are full of overpriced crud.

Also in Vic Park you will find the John Hughes Warehouse.. www.johnhughes.com.au

If your 106 Rallye is coming over I'll take it :P

Now then... thread hijack...

What's a good runabout for under $7000?

Should I look at Subaru (outback), should I stear clear of Ford.

It's a different world out here!

Edited to add some that we might consider:

Honda prelude?
Holden Commodore - i know - but the 5L V8...?
Audi A6?
BMW A34/E36?
Mazda 626 (6 cyl etc)?
Lexus 300/400?

Something a bit classy/nippy (I may have contradicted myself with the list there hehe).

What about the 4x4 style - I'm not even considering the Holden Buckeroo (or whatever it's called...) or maybe not a landy. Jeep/Toyota/Subaru?

I know it's pretty like buying second hand anywhere as far as the car goes - and these are all HIGH mileage (100K+mls)..; but what's good and what turns to mush in Brisbane conditions...

Thanks again...

I swear by 4 cylinder e36 BMWs. Not fast but they go. And go. And go. And go.

Sisters just clocked over 300,000km without an issue.
