DOTARS Import Permit

If you are not on shore in Australia when you put the application in, I don't think you'll get the relevant paperwork anyway (I did read that somewhere)...they only send import documents to an Australian address. My advice, wait an additional 8 months and then put the application in. The more evidence of usage you have, the better it looks IMO and this gives you ample time to show 20 months of use.
One thing I found out after I had shipped the car (in a container) was that if you have any parts that you want to bring out and they can fit in the car then you wont pay duty on them.. for example, should you wish to ship a spare exhaust over and you can put it in the car without marking or damaging the trim the do it! Load it up with the consumables that cost significantly more money over here than they do in the UK!
Hope that helps.

There is no expiry date to the import permit as far as I know. A friend imported a Lotus Elan 3 years after he got approval but that was few years back. My car landed here late last year, 12 months after getting the import approved without any questions. So you will have at least 12 months but I'm sure there's not limits.
As said above the original approval document will need to be sent to an address in Australia (this could be to a friends or employer etc). However, they will email/post a copy of the approval to you in the UK and you can use this to get the car shipped to Oz and clear customs etc. But you will need the original to get the car pass compliance and registered here.
Hope that helps
