No luck with the local press and free ads? I am struggling to get my daily car sold to despite it being advertised everywhere I can think of!!

I ended up trading my old car in as I had no results selling it. Cut my loss and move on

Yeah I think I am going to have to sell mine to a dealership and see what I can get.

I think the used market has collapsed because you can walk in to any number of dealerships and get a reasonably well equipped car with 0KMS on it for under $20K...they will even approve your $50/week finance while you drink a coffee.
I think most people are not interested in what the car is...all they see is the price of a used BMW being near the price of a new Corolla so they just go and get the Corolla instead. Vehicle dynamics, quality and equipment dont seem to matter.

I think you are right for the majority of car buyers here.

The last 3 vehicles I have sold (my old Mitsi van, My ex wife's EF Falcon, and my Dad's old ED that I used while waiting for the Monaro) I had no luck advertising. In Kalamunda (near to me but a long way from you I know) There is a bit of land that gets heaps of cars for sale parked there each weekend. Managed to sell all 3 by parking there with signs on thumbup

Got considerably more for each than had been offered for trade in, bought new vehicles for cash each time and picked up $1-2K extra on sale of each old car.

Is there anything similar down your way?

There is the odd spot I could leave the car on...problem is though that we are pretty active and always want the car to go somewhere.
Another problem is all the building work going on around my work means the car is always covered in flipping mud / dust and I'm struggling to keep it clean for more than a day or two!

Depends on the car as well.

Much easier to sell a Falcon than a BMW.

That said, the trade in I got was only $500 less than what I was expecting on a private sale, so not really complaining too much. In terms of the messing around every weekend dealing with tyre kickers it was so much easier.

On a 2001 318i? The only reason people would buy that would be because they are being a Badge snob. I'd rather have a new Corolla, Focus etc.

I drive the new rolla for about 700kms every fortnight.

Also the new Nissan Tiida for a similar distance and the OH's Mazda 3

I'd take a 01 318i over all of them.

Yes, but my point is no-one in their right minds would classify a 318i as a performance car that you could use for spirited driving. Something like a 330, yes.

IMO something like a new Ford Focus 2.0L Zetec would be a better car, definitely better to drive and comes with the warranty and much cheaper costs to run.

But then I still live in the UK where that car would be lucky to get 1/3-1/2 that in todays 2nd hand car market so that colours my opinion. (Also being an ex 5 series owner the 3's always felt a bit rubbish in comparison)

318i will have better handling balance than a 330i. If you think a new corolla will be more accomplished in the ride/handling dept. as a 2001 318i you have simply no idea about performance driving, so any "nice" car will be fine for you.

+1

You obviously can't compare driving an E46 3 series to a corolla or Focus. Regardless of it's power deficiency, it's handling ability is definitely not compromised.
I've also got a new Corolla and it's definately not the same.

Anyway, back on topic. Not in a rush to sell the car at all, merely testing the waters.

Just out of interest, how much has ESP improved over the years? Is the early BMW DSC a match for whatever they put in Focus / Corollas these days?
