Im intrested to look into the cost of Emigrating to AUS.
How much does it cost to get a working Visa.
How much to ship the dog over there
How long to get a working visa in AUS
for those who have emigrated, roughly what were your costs.

thanks
Nick

Can't help you with costs etc as I was brought here without choice when I was 10.
Just be VERY sure that you want to do it for the right reasons. Don't do it because you are unhappy where you are, most of the things that annoy you about England are at least as bad here. Be aware that Australia is not the place to live if you are into cars...

I know several people who have come here and then returned to England, costing them greatly.

ETA I imagine that in the scheme of things the cost of shipping a dog is insignificant...

Oh and WA is booming in terms of employment, don't know about IT but in general it's hard to find employees. With that has come stupid inflation in house prices, average house in ordinary suburb now $500K or 10X average wage.

How long is a piece of string...

What exactly are you bringing over with you?

What visa?...I know you said working visa but IIRC there are several available.

When are you planning on applying and moving here? You cant just get a visa and sit on it, most of them you need to be in the country in the following 6 months.

Are you buying or renting a house when you arrive?

Are you going to bring a car with you or buy when you get here?

What standard of car are you used to?

What city/state do you want to live in?

What class of flight do you want to get here?

How quickly do you want your stuff to arrive?

Its a tricky process getting an animal in...IIRC you need to get it vaccinated against rabies and all sorts of stuff, wait 6 months, get it tested to see if its carrying any of said diseases and then assuming that comes back clear you have to have the animal in to the country within X amount of weeks.

If its to short notice I believe you can just do the vaccinations here but your pet has to be in quarantine for quite some time.

Its not cheap and as already highlighted, make sure you do it for the right reasons. If you can, try to get a job where they will "sponsor" you for a work permit and are prepared to pay relocation costs.

In summary... this is what I paid:

Work Permit - 457 Long Stay: $2600 (including agency fee's)
Shipping of household goods: $4000 (Including marine insurance)
Medical (Chest X-Rays) : $200 - 300 (Cant remember the exact cost)

The rest is simple to be honest but expect to be paying out for things all the time, when shipping things over there are a large number of hidden costs (things like quarantine inspections on your household goods) and don't expect things to just happen, its very methodical.

457 Work permits are linked to a company (I think) so you'll be committing yourself to working at one place... once you get your residency its easier but that's a whole new can of worms to deal with and a HUGE cost! (I paid $5000 in total as I used an agency to help me do it)

Heaps of threads on this topic though so have a look through and read other people's experiences… don’t be put off but I would say give it a go…

Stevo,
WE've been here on the Sunshine Coast for 2 weeks after migrating.
If there's anything I can help you with, questions wise, drop me a mail.
I'd advise you to be prepared for the price of things over here. It's a bit of an eye opener no mater how much research you may have done.

Electrical goods, most furniture, clothes, EVO subscriptions, Food, banking, mobile phones, phone calls, broadband, medical care, air travel are more expensive.

Second Hand Cars are phenomenally expensive. And you pay stamp duty on a purchase of a car. If you can bring one from the UK do it. Ignore all that crap about not worth it unless its a classic or rare. Just compare BMW's/Merc etc in the UK to over here.

Car Insurance, Road Tax, Fuel, Breakdown Cover, Car Servicing, Mortgage rates, eating out, car parking and lottery tickets are cheaper....

I always thought there wasn't much in it. I had been comparing my Tesco bills with those online at Coles and found them to be reasonable comparable. Things like nappies were way cheaper in the UK, but as for food it evened itself out.

As for electrical goods, I thought the same, not much in it. Airfares, well it depends, these days it's expensive in the UK because of taxes. Jetstar do offer some pretty good rates to Asia though which you'd never get over here.

Although the lower salaries in Aus would mean it was more expensive in comparison.

My mine gripe would be lack of decent menswear such as Next or M&S, there just isn't anything comparable so you either have to fork out for expensive designer stuff or put up with badly made crap.

Cheers Dave and Wanchaiwarrior!
Are visa's are just being stamped at Australia house - should be back any day now. We can then book the flights! One thing that guts me about going to Oz is the fact that i wont be able to have a decent car. They are just too expensive! My previous cars have been Porsche, TVR lotus etc.. looks like ill be getting an Astra!!

If you have owned your car for more than 12 months - import it, its well worth the effort and expense in my opinion.

Steve, if you still have your Cerb and have owned ot for more than 12 months then you can import it. Not a cheap process but there is nothing to stop you bringing it.

Cheers Bob

I got rid of the cerb a few months ago - loved that car and i did think about taking it but it had no air con. I had it for two years and experienced a few hot days in it - not very comfortable to say the least. I have a s2 elise now which ive only owned for 6 months and i know you have to have 12 months ownership before exporting. To be honest a nice house with a pool should offset the ste car ill be getting! What cars do you guys own?

But you get a much better badge. That alone is probably worth it.
