Having had a look on Carsale.com.au and Uniquecars.com.au and deciding that for $15k or under a Falcodore is too boring, what would be your choice for something a little bit different. Criteria is:

1.Quick
2.Quite cool

Toyota MR2...thats what I have and it rocks!

errr...I have run out of ideas!

Skylines?
Celica GT4's? Not really a fan of either myself but they are quick enough and take well to mods. If you get a Jap turbo in your price range then there will probably be a few issues that need fixing.

Tried this about a year ago - roughly same criteria. Not much that hasn't been trashed, but 306 GTI6, 406 3.0 V6 and early Forester GT were all in the running. Also MX5 if you're in it for fun rather than outright speed.

However its not cool but i did see a Honda Legend with leather etc for $12k being only 7 years old which i thought was good for wafting. But not really cool is it.

Its crazy isnt it - $15k or about 7000 Gbp and theres literally nothing, and then you go on the PH classified and its like a haven of fantastic cars for that or less. gutting.

In some respects i cant think of how you could enjoy a good car here as you cant boot it like in the uk without the fear of getting caught with severe penalties or the roads are rubbish and there arent many good driving roads.

Does it really annoy those with quick cars that they are always holding them back?

I've just had a look at unique cars under $20k within 10kms of me, and I'd be spoilt for choice! There is even a Mazda RX3 in there...Can't wait until I buy a house with a double garage, stick the Foulcan out in the weather and get a toy to play with....

As for not being able to drive powerful cars....I must admit driving the Commodore is like trying to keep a rabid Rottweiler under control...I have to restrict myself to getting up to 60kph as quickly as possible...while watching for plod because I've read that even rapid acceleration can by classed as hooning frown

RX3 for under $20K

I bought mine for $1500 (mint, original) and then turned it into a race car, would have been better keeping it standard and racing my RX7 instead hehe

Yes it can...they can ping you for a number of things.

Excessive noise.
Street racing..you might not be but if the guy next to you gives it a squirt to then you will be in a world of poo.
Acceleration timing..though if you havent got a stop watch on the dash I dont know how they will prove it.
And the best one...excessive acceleration rolleyes

How they can judge what excessive acceleration is I dont know!

And don't go driving a rwd car in the wet. Apparently slight wheelspin on a hill start at a red light in very light rain when the road is slipperiest is classified as a burnout.

LOL, i love this thread. Is there ANYTHING you CAN do in your cars out here without getting points, fines or crushing smile I agree that i would love to see the Bill trying to prove some of these things in court, but who wants it to get that far?
My choice at 15k (if you strike lucky) would be a Ford Cougar. Its not fast as it only has about 180bhp, FWD etc. But its good for nearly 150 MPH, it handles really well and it is unusual out here. It was what i was aiming to buy as a first car as i had one brand new in 1999 in the uk and really enjoyed it. 19's and lowered and i think it would really stand out on Oz roads smile MX5 was not a bad idea. Real fun gettting the back end out even if they are not very fast. Can they be got for 15k though?

Cougars are rare here and can be got for about $15k. Or about 7 grand english for a 60k mile year 2000.

Unless you bring your own car over from the UK, forget getting anything remotely decent in this backwater for a decent price. Theres no bargains to be had i tells ya!

There're a few MX-5s around under the 15k mark, mostly either Mk 1s or a couple of Mk2s with intergalactic Kms though.

I'd be tempted to look at the Mitsubishi Galant/Legnum VR4 for that sort of money though. Probably doesn't fit the cool requirement too highly but fast, fun practical and a very rare sight on Aussie roads.

Totally agree.

I wish, really wish, I'd bought a car in the uk a year before i moved here, and shipped it over, and bought something nice like a TVR, Boxster, M5 E39, BMW 330D,E36 M3, Well anything prestige or desirable really, as they are expensive here.

I wonder if the usual advice of unless its rare or a vintage dont bother is right, because even taking into account shipping costs, i reckon its far better to ship one in.

e.g. 1999 E36 - good one - 8k in the uk. Here, try $50k or 20k + UK GBP.

exactly mate, prices of cars here is a royal pisstake.

I'm getting really fed up of driving here, I'm currently thinking of getting another car, i wanted an Elise but they're rocket ship money here, back in blighty theyre a bargain, ticks me right off. Classic 911? forget it! NSX, dream on. All these cars are within my budget in the UK. I thought about getting a vespa to nip around on, ding dong nots so fast sonny jim, that will be 6000 dollars please!

Tell me about it. Makes me want to cry. All these good cars priced way out of competition to protect a group of piss poor manufacturers who can't function without protection.

Can anyone tell me what the true shipping costs are of a car from the uk?

I understand its dependant on value etc but what are we really looking at for something like an 8000 gbp E36 M3 to bring to oz?
