Hi,

I'm coming over from UK at the end of this month for 6 weeks and part of my journey i plan to travel from Adelaide to Melbourne driving the great ocean road.

Can anyone recommend a car hire company for 1 way travel from Adelaide to Melbourne?

Also, will i need to bring anything special to be able to Hire a car in Oz or can i just use my passport? Or just bring my paper driving license? - I don't have a photo one.

Cheers,

Tim.

Hi Tim - depends what sort of car you want to hire. There are the usual suspects such as Budget, Europa Car, Hertz, Avis etc but they don't have anything exotic. I recently hired a new Lancer with tiptronic gear box for a trip down the Ocean Road which was ok - but obviously not in the same league as my old Elise. They all do one way rentals. There are a few higher end rental companies such as www.mscr.com.au that can rent you a sports car (Lotus, Porshe etc) but not sure they do one-way rentals.

As for your license I use my UK license all the time (although I have the photo card one) even though I have lived here about a year. I'm not sure what happens if you only have the old paper style license - might be worth calling ahead and checking with the rental company.

Just done this but the other way around, if your going to do it get a nice sportscar to do it in and not a crappy Rav4 that we had, would've made the journey more interesting!

Hi,

Thanks for the replies - I'll see how the prices range and then according to how much i have spent on other stuff during the trip, decide which option to go for! Would be nice to do it in a nice convertable though!

Hopefully my driving licence will be ok, 'cause i wont be able to get a photocard one in time before i go!

If it's not, i guess i'll be getting the bus!

Cheers,

Tim.

Your driving license will be fine, I only have a paper one and hired cars all over Oz.

Just back from a run down that way over the last few days.

Weather was a bit rubbish but got a few breaks in the rain to allow for some fantastic roof off action along the Great Ocean Road. Some fantastic sections along the side of the cliffs and stunning scenery.

Be carefull passing through the various towns though, the police were definately out and about with laser speed traps being spotted a few times where the limit dropped down to 60kph going through the villages.

Sounds good, and i'll watch out for the Police!

Will be down in Adelaide in a couple of weeks, in Cairns at the moment.

Looking forward to driving the road, just wish i had my TVR to drive it in though!

When we did it they were shuting the road from 3pm to 6pm for a lot of Porsche's that were doing a charity run, also had a few Bristols come through as well.
