Hi Guys I'm in the UK I would like to get broadband for my mothering law for X mass.

I don't understand alot of how it all works over there..

So can I have some advice.

She is a telstra customer for her land line and has a pay as you go mobile phone.

She doesn't really want a contract mobile she makes little calls..

So any advice on who to go for and what sort of cost..

we will be paying for it. And as she really wants it to keep in touch with us and her new Grandson via Skype. Video Link. If it's slower on a cheaper plan then that's fine.. Cheaper than a flight..

thanks in advance

Give this a go:

http://www.unwired.com.au/

Or this:

https://www.mysoul.com.au/bweb/html/shopping/broad...

Both a worthy alternative to Telstra, from what I understand, not everywhere has full broadband access at the moment, Im in Sydney and it all works okay for me.

HTH.

Unwired gives you a 14 day trial, in case it doesn't work in your home - which was the problem I had due to thick walls and the lie of the land. No probs getting money back.

Currently looking for a good deal, so will post results as and when.

Cheers Guys for that..

I have big pond coming back to me later today,

I checked out the link for the others they look interesting and i will check out there offers also. Big thanks for that.

Also the other one alowed you to check out your tel number for broadband or ASDL and it's not available .. oh well.

I must say the speeds you have on offer there are very slow.. almost archaeic

Once the internet and broadband hit Austrailia properly it's going to turn Austrailia upside down in a good way. My mothering law was a little stunned at what we do here in the UK with the internet, shopping ( super markets Dropping the food off ) , video calls etc etc and the speed of it.. I must say as much as we hate them the EU ( europe commision ) they did a good job in driving forward broadband ( cable laying ) accross Europe. Most of us are all on 8meg connections as standard, and unlimited. Anyway it's a great thing makes the world very small..

I've just returned from the UK. Yes broadband is a joke here! Very expensive and not very fast with very limited download limits.

If she is not in an area with landline or cable ADSL / Broadband coverage then you could try www.virginbroadband.com.au Its $60 a month but for that you can do away with the Telstra landline connection fee ($39 per month), you get free calls to any landline in Australia, Free 512K broadband with 4Gb download per month and if she exceeds that her bandwidth is reduced to 128K with unlimited download for the rest of the month. She gets free calls to any virgin mobile in Oz as well.

She can port her current Telstra over as well. It works off the 3G mobile net work so she will get a free wireless modem and all she has to do is plug in any normal phone into, all she needs is a computer with WIFI connectivity.

It works great and I would highly recommend it! Its a load cheaper than anything around at the moment.

Thanks all idea's for the pot will check that out.. I see Richard has his fingers in lots of pie's even in Oz..

Mind you where he goes I would say follow..

I can't even think about coming over till your braodband speeds are anywhere nr as good. Such a shame.. You guys could use it way more than us for the likes of the school radio could turn into the school video link.. a class of 20 kids one teacher and they could be spread all over the place ..

I know 4gb is like a few weeks worth after doing all the online shopping and web site building Oz is very behind on computer stuff. I showed my mobile phone to the guy in the good guys in Perth he ran round the shop showing all his work mates!!!!! it's got quicker down load speeds than most of the lap tops they were selling NEW!!!

still not really got anywhere on this.. Testra and big pond are $29.99 a month so might have to go for that but it's for 2 years!!!

and I don't know if it's anygood or not..

Oh and they look good those links but none of them have availablity in Perth WA..

shocking, hmmm i might have to start a interent company in Perth and get things moving.. and a wake WA up to the next industrial revolution..

Im probably on satans side but when i moved out in Feb I just used Bigpond. This is because I couldnt get the fastest speeds with anyone else (but am on 2mbps) and get a usage limit of 12gb per month which is absolutely fine. It costs me about $70 per month, but had a deal whereby first 6 months were half price.

I was wondering if i'd stuffed up but as it turned out its been absolutely aok. The easiest thing was the set up even with my own router being used rather than theres. I was being talked into buying one of theirs but a polite no sorted that one. Just dont buy it through a telstra shop as they are very dumb and will sell stuff without any knowledge. Also they dont run the best deals.

My advice would be to avoid Telstra as their plans are not competitive. They are expensive, data is not only small compared with others, but they count upload as well as download. They also only give 1 mail box per account.
If the OP's relly is in Perth then there is a good chance she would be able to get a plan with iinet, which would be much better value.
I am with them and for $60 a month I get ADSL2+ with VOIP and sync at just over 20meg with 21gig data per month.
If you don't want to put up much information in the public domain you may send me a private message and I can advise you about your options. I do a bit of work in this area.

TPG are quite popular and are fairly good in terms of reliability of connection, speeds etc.
If you can not get ADSL2+ with a provider that has their own equipment in the exchange, and as this is for (I think) your mum or gran? you should think of going with someone with very good help. In other words, a provider that answers the telephone.
TPG are not so good in this area or with billing issues.
Best provider for mums and dads is Westnet.
Has anybody recommended http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/ to you.

use whirlpool, put in her phone number and get a list of providers. Don't use Telstra or Optus due to poor service and support, I Use netspace or iinet for my clients as small enough to give proper service but not the cheapest, work out useage first and go shaped for security of mind. Never pay extra if you go over your allowance as I have had clients receive bills from both for $1000's because they went with both larger carriers, they never back down saying its the customers fault, simply through trojans etc always assume the customer does not understand. Telstra also don't support networks (great with their "wired house add' ) always use a router on ethernet , never USB always get them to use a reputable anti virus even if its just the free AVG and use the firewall in the router not rely on MicroSoft.

Avoid using Bigpond. I haven't found them particularly good so far. The plans available are pretty poor (monthly plans are either 400Mb or 12Gb limit with nothing in between!).

Don't know what their Tech Support is like, I'm wating to find out because I just had to uninstall their own brand security package because it wouldn't let me upload anything (including replying to forum threads). Plus it was making things so slow I could have drawn the pages myself before they loaded.

Anyway, try someone else.

biggrin I had already been warned that if I want to use something like Amazon it has to be a US site.. No offence but i thought the UK was behind the times, and 70 dollars a month is criminal. Australians are getting into online banking tho arnt they?
