importing vintage Porsches
Discussion
Help after 7 years ( life changing years ) I just can't bear to sell my cars.. the 65 car will be sold that's fine but the ones listed below I just can't leave behind a better life with out me cars... is no life..
So what will I get stung on with these cars..and am I best leaving the 54 car as a project car in bits..because I have already paid tax's once to get the car in the UK..that cost me enough as I was able to claim at the time reduced tax but was never told so I paid full 17.5% tax!!
here is my post I posted on the back of the merc question of importing..
if it helps my soon to be wife is an Ozy and from Perth..can she import them for less tax..
I too am moving to Oz in 2009 but getting wed there in Jan 2008.
I am looking to take my 1969 912 which I have had for 7 years ( Uk Value £8500, paid in the US in 1999 before work was done £1200 )
and my 1954 356 Pre A Porsche out there to and again I have had it 7 years.. ( UK value as is in bits £10-12-14K bought in 1999 £4400 finished value in the UK £28,000 )
The Porsche 912 is a finished car but the 356 is still in bits, now this car is worth alot of money so am I better off taking the car in, as a project in bits..
I am in Oz on this Thursday ( Perth ) next week I will keep an eye out on this post..
Cheers
I really do mean it these cars are my life people who know me have all said the same you sell the cars you will miss home and not settle..

Is the 912 LHD? If it is best check if you can import it. If memory serves LHD cars are generally not allowed.
You wife will pay the same as you. She would need to own one od the cars and use it for 12 monhs before she could import it. You are only allowed to import one vehicle every 12 months so you may want to think about putting one of the cars in her name anyway.
The Webesite below should contain all the information you need.
www.dotars.gov.au/transport/safety/road/bulletin/importing.aspx
As for the 356, well I imigine it has to be worth less in bits so it must be cheaper to import in bits. I would contact an independant valuer in Oz and find out what the vehicles values are likely to be. Then you can have a pretty good idea what the import cost will be.
Normally you have to own and use a car for more than 12 months to import it. I am not sure how you go with the 356. You have owned it but not used it I guess.
Anyway good luck.

No this is wrong. Only if the cars are built after 31 December 1988 will you need to satisfy the personal import route or find a RAW with compliance. Cars built pre January 1989 are eligible for import pretty much regardless of anything. Some states allow LHD to be registered such as WA and Tas.
In both cases you will have import duty and GST to pay based upon an independent evaluation without you have just purchased the car as then it is deemed as it's current market value. Obviously the last part doesn't apply to personal imports.

912uk - I am also getting married in Aus next year and also thinking about a move in 2009, but to Melb. There maybe some merit in exploring sharing shipping arrangements. Get in touch offline if your interested -

Are you 100% sure about the pre '89 bit? I thought you could only import these cars (other than personal import) if you had a licence to do so, which I think costs over $100k?
Pre 89 cars are easy to bring in. Besides personal imports only allow one car per person per year. With cars of value having original receipts or being able to *provide* them will help with taxes. Also cars over a certain age can be brought in and registered as Left hookers so while this is fine in Perth as they allow LHD it allows you to sell to other states if you wish without conversion problem.

Guaranteed 100% correct, I have done both. Read the link I provided to the DOTARS web site above. You are getting confused with cars that need compliance not imported under the pre 89 rule and personal imports. Effectively there are 3 main ways:
1) Personal import - any age if you meet the requirements.
2) Compliance (SEVS scheme) any age but they will be for cars made after 1988.
3) Old 15 year rule capped off at 31/12/1988. Any car can be imported pretty much freely. Where you may have troubles is in getting it to meet the current standards as imposed by the state registering authorities.
rules rules rules... it is putting me off coming over.. thanks for the info I am going to call the import people again.. armed with this info.. I had an independant value when I was out there and due to being LHD they valued the cars $15,000 each which is good news for me as that's better than I thought.. but still rules rules ... I mean you have more rules than Us and we are the land of rules...
I will be back in Jan and will have a real think if I can put up with this or not.. so far I am going right off moving to OZ, ment to be an easy life not a bloody headache!! BBQ or BBQ we can do BBQ's here.
