TVR T350T has arrived
Discussion
Hey Robert.
Will be moving to SA later on in the year and I'm in the process of getting info together on taking my Noble M12 GTO3R over. Would you mind if I dropped you a line nearer the time and perhaps you could share your experience of dealing with Shipping / Customs / Registration etc. Looking forward to seeing pics of your TVR in a proper motoring environment.

Well done Robert !!
How long was it stuck in the docks for ??
I've recently got my import approval to ship my Lotus Esprit to Adelaide - should be shipping in August (if I can sell the house here in London).
Steve - That's a nice M12. I do look forward to seeing that on the SA roads. Where in particular are you planning to move to ??
FYI - The 'Sporting Car Club of South Australia' (SCCSA) has just started up it's own Forum (quite new with only a small number of members). You should have a squiz.
The Forum is open to everyone.

Thanks Simon - I'll keep an eye on the SCCSA forum from now on. Every bit of info will help I'm sure. Looking to move to the Port Augusta area but will go virtually anywhere depending on employment availability and good driving roads. Perhaps I can pick your brains as well once you've completed your move. Good luck with the house sale !
Steve, Simon
She was stuck in Melbourne docks for nearly 4 weeks. The date of manufacture was incorrect on the import approval form. I missed that and so did DOTARS but Customs did not. I called DOTARS and they fixed it no problem but it took 2 weeks, then I was away in the UK. Luckily I did not get stiffed for the storeage costs because the delay was not my fault.
Import tax and duty was $14k in all, not as bad as I feared. Just be sure to get local valuation done it will save you 1000's. I can pass along the details of the chaps I used in Victoria if that works in SA.
I just had the compliance inspection and Roadworthy test completed today. Nothing needed to be done.
I have applied for my compliance plate, when I have that I will be able to get the registration then I am off and running.
I have to say that I have had no problems dealing with the authorities, they have been most helpful. I should be on the road in a week or so.
As soon as I have a mo, i'll upload some images.
Shame you guys will be in Adelaide, not quite a day trip from Melbourne. I haven't seen any Esprit's or Nobles here mores the pity. Still want an S4S one day myself. As for a Noble well I an frightened to try one, i'll be wanting one of those as well!
Cheers

It must have felt dang good driving it out of the docks for the first time.
Did it start fine (Do they disconnect the battery prior to shipping ?). I know my battery will only last about 4 weeks with no use - due to the alarm.
Re: the valuation stuff. How do they choose who values the car. Do you get some local dealer friend or do they choose ?? I was thinking that they would use my original purchase price from the authorised UK Lotus dealer - which equates to around Au$43k, whereas the current price in Oz for my car is around Au$70 - 80k.
Just checked my Import Approval for the correct Year of Manuf. and Serial No. Phew - Everythings okay there.

The battery was flat, I had to break into the car but Peninsula had given me the "how to" for that. I shipped the jump leads with the car and the AQUIS, (Quarantine inspector), chappie gave me a jump start. Trouble is the immobiliser had taken on a mind of its own so it took a good 20 mins to finally get the immobiliser released. After that she started no problem. I did enjoy the drive home from the docks but I was a bit paranoid about watching temperatures and pressures just in case.
There are three possible valuations:
1) The price you paid
2) The price you would pay in Australia for that car
3) The price that the car is valued at by an independant valuer. That person can take into account condition and the cost of having the car prepared for registration in Australia.
In my case 2) was a no go as there were no T350's in Australia.
I could have used 1) but @£42k the tax and duty would have made my eyes water!
I spoke to a valuer and he was very helpful. Because there were no other T350's He could put in a low value. There is nothing to compare to and nobody knew what it would cost to roadworthy the car. In the event the car was valued @$55k, ~£20k. The other thing that the valuer did was start with the UK price of the car - VAT.
If the car can be valued at <$50k or so then you will pay ~20% in tax and duty. Above $50k then you will get hit with an extra 10%, (30% in total), luxury car tax on the value above $50k. So you can see why taking route 3) was the best for me.
Send me a mail and I can give you a detailed "how to". No doubt SA is a bit different to VIC but the main points should be valid.
Cheers
