Australia for 3 weeks in June/July
Discussion
Hey all,
I'm going to be travelling down to Australia at the end of June for 3 weeks. I'll be flying into Melbourne on the 26th of June. That's about the extent of my planning so far! Any car clubs doing autocrosses or anything around that time? What should a car guy not miss?
I'm waffling between flying up to Sydney, or renting a car and driving. How strict are the speed limits between melb-syd? I know it's 100kph, but would I get tossed in the clink for 130'ish (depending on conditions/congestion/etc/etc of course)??
As well, I'll be bringing resumes along, anyone know of a company looking for an Electronics Systems Engineer? I won't be able to work over my holiday, but I'll move down there if I can find a decent job.
Thanks mate!
Gary

Hey, I am going out there about the same time for 6 months
This thread could well give you a bit of bedtime reading and a few ideas: www.tyresmoke.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=lounge&Number=410173&fpart=&PHPSESSID=767fcc500aa8be248001692b1302d656
As for car stuff, there is the Fox collection in Melbourne itself which might be open when you are out there. It includes an Enzo, F50 and F40 IIRC. There is always Bathurst as well and a few very nice dealers and collections in Sydney as well.
Good Luck!

Hi,
Just thought I'd pipe up and say hello!
I'm moving to Melbourne in 1 week, relocating with my company on a 4 year sponsorship.
This is a bit of spur of the moment thing for me, was asked 3 weeks ago and only confirmed last week, so I have absolutely no idea what to expect, so any advice would be appreciated! Maybe we could have a mini pistonheads meet sometime in June/July?

What's this - A mass exodus or something.
Coppers are usually content with the 10% rule for speed limits. So for the 100 limit, they won't pull you for 110, but get caught doing 115 and you're done. Slowing down for small towns (60 zone) is a must do. They like to hide in these small places.
Melbourne to Sydney is roughly 1000kms which equates to around a 10 hour drive, and can be done in a day, but if you're a tourist it's best to take a couple of days to enjoy the scenery. You will encounter kangaroos and they will destroy your car (completely).
Melbourne is much like London. Dull grey cold and miserable - especially during Winter. Summertime can reach 40 deg C+ for a few days. They have some fine sports car shops in Melbourne as well as Sydney.
The best place for Engineering jobs at the moment is Adelaide. This city is the hub for defence work and they are currently running very short of qualified engineers - plenty of goo jobs available at the moment, and over the next twelve months. Some big contracts are coming up in the next few months.

I leave tomorrow afternoon. I'll be in Melbourne Sunday morning.
Any of the Aussie PH crew going to the V8 HPDC series race at Eastern Creek Raceway July 8th - 10th?? I'm hoping to be there.
If anyone wants to go for beer in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, or anywhere else I need to see, drop me a line through my profile.
see ya mate,
Gary
