Good morning PH,

I shall be landing in Perth next Thursday, and aim to get a car as soon as possible.

Being completely alien to purchasing vehicles in Australia, I'm open to advice. I feel fairly confident over here in Blighty having worked in the trade but I don't know the in's and out's over yonder.

I am aware cars do not need an annual "check" as such, which leads me to believe there may be some absolute dogs in the classifieds. I know "rego" and I know the third party (injury only?) state insurance as I have been over several times. Is it worth getting fully comp (or at minimum third party damage)

In terms of transferring ownership, do I need to apply for anything prior to buying or will my English licence, passport and address details suffice? I have a permanent address already as I have family out there.

Also any suggestions on actual vehicles would be great. I would love an AWD / 4x4 of some description, budget of around $5,000-$7,000. I have seen many Ford Territory's for sale (which I believe are Aus built) but know nothing of reliability. A small camper would be ideal (same budget) Again, seen a few converted Hiaces with moon miles on.

Thank you, and if anybody is in Perth drop me a message!

Not all Terror-tories! are AWD, so be careful there. Fuel is not as exy as the UK, but most of the early ones are petrol so I am not sure on their fuel consumption.
Is it a tourist car (ie drive all around Australia) or everyday car til you settle in?
Does it need to carry 85 people and 5 dogs plus their luggage?
Does it need to go off-road or just dirt roads?
Subaru Outback or Forester maybe?

I find carsales is more up to date than carsguide but carsguide sometimes has more WA cars than the other.

Head to Vic Park. A lot of car dealers are on Albany Highway. The north end is newer stuff, and as you head down Albany Highway they get cheaper.

Remember we also pay stamp duty on cars (over a certain value) .

Getting a car is easy if you have an address. UK licence is no worries.

Good luck. There is a lot of boring crap out there at prices that'll make a pom cry.

I'd be looking at Land Cruisers and Prados. Had a Subaru Outback and it was easily one of the worst cars I've ever owned (and I drove a Ford Escort for a while).

I can't advise on all the formalities of car buying but I'm in Perth atm with work so happy to tag along as a second pair of eyes if you will. Suggest hiring a cheap car from Bayswater for the day and do the rounds.

I do keep an eye on the local Facebook market place which does have some interesting stuff pop up for sale. Might be an option..??
