Sold my e39 528 as felt id see some large bills looming amd look ar getting a 12-15 month stop gap car.

Found a 2017 Astra RSV with 3000kms for $18500 - seems like incredible value for a 12 month old car that was $33k new, 147kw and a truck load of kit. Seems nothing that new, quick or well equipped can be had for the same.

Anyone got experience or thoughts on them?

For ref, need a near new car for tax and financing reasons so yes there are more exciiting cars but not at this price or age.

I'm slightly biased because I work for Holden.

I've had several Astras on lease since they were launched - I just handed back an RSV and got an RS which the OH took off me so now I'm using the LT wagon she had. The OH loves the hatch. They ride/drive well and are great as an every day car.

The boot isn't massive and the 1.6s only like 95 RON but I was getting about 6.5 l/100km out of mine on my commute - the OH is about 8 because she only goes 5 kms to and from work.

Check the build date (sticker under the bonnet on the slam panel just above the LH headlamp IIRC) - the early ones were built in 2016 but are 2017 Model Year.

At $18.5k it seems cheap - check it very carefully for any signs of body repairs (that holds true for anything that looks like really good value though, not just the Astra). Although there are a lot of them in dealer land so prices have probably dropped a bit as a result.

Have you got a link to the ad, or the rego / VIN?

Thanks, top post.

I cant seem much wrong with them and thankfully the boot will never get used.

Apparently its a 2016 built car listed is as a 2017 - is that a problem? Havent actually seen it as its coming out of the eastern states as its an ex Holden car - does that mean much to you?

Theres a st load coming to WA and they do seem to be hesding south quickly price wise.

Welcome any further guidance - no reg or vin but will get that soon - if i got it could you check anything to see? Ive got a contract to buy subject to a few get outs if needed.

Heres the ad: https://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/Holden-...

Ex-Holden should mean ex-company lease or company car.

They start building the Model Year (MY) in August of the year prior, so MY17 goes from Aug 16 to Aug 17. From memory there was next to no difference from MY17 to MY18 anyway.

Are those pics of the actual car or just stock images? Only asking because ad says build date Nov but it looks to me like the underbonnet pic has a label that says Oct - bottom LH corner of the pic. Won’t make any difference in terms of the car but maybe worth checking.

All I’d be able to check with the VIN is build date, compliance date, and where it arrived - looks like you already know that.

Assuming they are a Holden main dealer ask them to confirm that any service updates have been done.

Thanks - actual car i believe.

Ill have a look but as you say not sure what difference it might make tbh. There seem to be a bunch of 2016 build my2017 for sale but for a few grand more. Am wondering if its got hail repaired though for the price.

Ill chat to then about the service. Im taking it that it should have been serviced given they have a 9month requirement?

What are they like to drive everyday, whats the good, whats the bad?

Looks like it has sold already! Shacks in Freo?
One of my departed Commodores was an ex Holden management/employee car. Wish I hadn't let that one go!

Yeah sold to me as I’ve done the contract.

Yep Shacks in Freo. Not sure if they’re any good but I figure all they have to do is receive the car, clean it, take my money and give me a key laugh

I did look at the Commodores but this thing looks cheap to run - RACWA even give a ‘20% insurance discount due to emissions’ which is something I’ve not heard before.

Think it’ll be a very competent little thing.

The dealers are full of them just now - they’ve been selling at around 500 a month or so and then in December it jumped to over 2,000. There are a lot of demos in the network plus anything ex-company lease goes to dealer auction. Anything with km on it is going to have to be priced way lower than a brand new demo given how many are out there.

If it is coming out of QLD or NSW then yes, hail is definitely a possibility. Check it as thoroughly as you can. Looks like there are quite a few in WA so if you’ve got any doubts then maybe pay a little more for something you’re sure about.

Should have been serviced by now.

They are good cars day to day. I’m not convinced they are terribly quick but I’m used to V8 Commodores. They go, stop and handle well. The only thing that bugs me is the ride can be a bit harsh over rough surfaces. The equipment level on the RSV is great - not sure how much use you’ll get from a heated steering wheel in Perth though smile

I can’t compare it to VW / Mazda etc because I’ve not driven them. Doubt you’ll find anything as well equipped with as low km for that money though.

I really like the look of the new Ashtray. I haven't driven one, but they are mighty cheap as a near new proposition. If you aren't concerned about performance - I'd say you could probably get a brand new R+ for around that money!

There is really nothing else around at that price point. How much warranty is on it - Holden were offering lengthy ones on some models?

Based on the VIC rego and where it was originally delivered to it is an ex-Holden company car.

Just check it over same as you would any another 2nd hand car.

So drive the car - was, well an Astra. Nothing spectacular but not bad.

It was pokey and went alrightish - it’s a manual and so much better than the auto I drive which felt sluggish.

Loads of kit and safety stuff which I’ve never bothered about but having felt Lane departure warning and automatic braking assist in action is pretty good.

Was built Nov 2016, registered July 2017 and given it’s a demo with the sales chap telling me I’m the first registered owner was then surprised that the warranty starts when first registered so technically I’ve a 26 month warranty not 36 - not a biggie I spose.

Pick it up a Saturday but for a car that was $35k new and still smells and feels new with 3k kms on the clock I’ve got it for $18k and with the go and the kit it’s alright and quite happy to see how it goes for a year or so.

Wow, shows you what sort of price they should be in the first place. That sounds like cheap motoring.

laugh true...

Yeah youd be insane to go for a new one. I mean this used one will hold its value about as well as a used condom but no regrets so far (but havent picked it up yet so... laugh

Not to be vulgar about money if anyones keen to hear about how the financing/business tax stuff works out id be ok to share. No exciting but might give food for thought for some

Not sure if anyone cares as its just an Astra but thought I'd do an update.

So I've had the car 3 weeks now and done 1000kms and I'm genuinely impressed by it and am very happy with the choice.

The good? Well its definitely got some poke - i see in the UK its called the SRi 200 BHP which is much more of what it feels than the RS-V name gives away. It feels good for the 7.0 -100 kph time or 6.6 0-60mph time. My friend had a 2009 Civic Type R and up to 110 it feels as quick as that when i drove that so gives an insight into how far warm hatches have become. Im actually quite surprised about how quick it is for what it is - it takes me back to my ealry 20s and having quick hatches in the UK. I test drove an auto before the manual i got and that felt sluggish so am really glad i got the manual. Which brings me to the gearbox - bit jerky and notchy in 1st into 2nd but then in pretty decent and certainly decent enough although not brilliant - still positive though.

My old e39 528 had 142kw and 280nm and this thing has 147kw and same torque i think but is 100kg lighter and its much faster than the BMW was. Performance thumbs up.

Handling? Mixed. - nice and weighty in most instances but does have a bit of understeer easier than i would like but have driving rwd for a while so might just be me.

Kit? Jeez this things bloody loaded and am thoroughly impressed - not sure apart from electric memory seats what im missing. Heated seats and steering wheel, apple car play, rear camers and sensors, lane departure which nudges the wheel back to lane if you sway over the line which is really a lot better than i thought it would be and proximity sensors which is 'alright'. Must admit im buggered if i can tell if its got emergency braking - its supposed to but never seems to kick in.

The infotainment system is bloody good and love the way it almost instantly connect and starts my phone media on start up. Easy to use and quick satnav entry system makes it a pleasure. Good stereo for a regular hatch.

Fuel - 6.6l 100km over the 1000 so really decent. Am spending about $25 a week less than my old e39 528.

Annoyances? More beeps than one of those hospital heart monitors. Always bloody beeping. Parking sensors are always going off front and back and ridiculously loud. You can turn them off but have to do again each trip.

Electric parking brake - whoever thought this would work with a manual is an idiot. However it auto disengages if you move off.

Has a manual bonnet support pole not gas struts which are 20 years ago.

Overall though, poke, quality of steering and kit i think its a bloody ripper for $18k with 3000kms on it.

6.6l for consumption? Damn that's good.

Glad to hear you are enjoying it. Will it stay when the Ford arrives?
