Possibly moving to Sydney for 2 years on secondment, advice

Advice needed.
I could be moving to Sydney with a new role that is minimum of 6 months, possibly 2 years or longer.
Everything bar booze is on expense, they are going to supply a property and its for myself and OH.
Would be good to know the areas that are nice to live and close to everything, we have the equivalent pricing of a 2 bed place in London, so circa £2k a month to rent.
Also what other advice can be given to me.

Lots of nice areas within 5 kms of Sydney cba with that budget. If it was me I would be checking out 1) Balmain 2) Mosman 3) Paddington 4) Coogee or Bondi. This will give you a good feel of what you get east, west and north of cbd in some nice areas. If it was me I would probably go Balmain. It's close to cbd, can take ferry to work if you want, nice village feel, great pubs and restaurants. I don't think you can go wrong here
Ultimately the end decision may be driven by where your work is located but given the gig I would guess banking etc so likely is in the cbd.

You shouldn't need it to commute but I would get a car included. Public transport is just not as good in Sydney and on weekend it will come in very handy. If you can get it included it's a no brainer. Is there anything to watch out for?

The CBD area is fairly well-accessible from most parts of Sydney, so perhaps think about what you want from where you live. Do you like going to pubs, restaurants, shopping, a more urban setting and so on, or do you prefer a place close to bushland, or the beach?? There is something nice about living within a 15-20 mins drive of the CBD, yet having an ocean surf beach on your doorstep, but its not for everyone.
I'd suggest getting a serviced apartment in the CBD or near to it for a couple of weeks to start you off, and then spend a weekend trawling the places you think you might like to live. We did Newtown (trendy, urban), then Bondi (nuff said), then Manly, and we've stayed on the Northern Beaches since. Friends in Balmain swear by living there, though they are right on the water.
As for a car, you won't need one living close to the city, but you might want one to make it easier to get around and out of the city. They're not cheap - www.carsales.com.au is a good starting place.

Pubs, restaurants, shopping, things to do, not too far away from anything that means we need transport to do anything, obviously the beach is a bonus, etc... we will be coming across knowing only 2/3 people in Sydney so a friendly area (unlike most of london) that you can get to know neighbours, etc would be advantageous.

Nothing to worry about then. All those things are available close by (you aren't moving to the middle of the outback you realise Pubs, restaurants, shopping, things to do, not too far away from anything that means we need transport to do anything, obviously the beach is a bonus, etc... we will be coming across knowing only 2/3 people in Sydney so a friendly area (unlike most of london) that you can get to know neighbours, etc would be advantageous.
). Sydney has most (if not all) of the upside of London with better climate and nicer people. No place is perfect though. Police take a draconian view of speeding, Sydney can feel expensive (though on your wicket probable less so), public transport needs an overhaul, traffic can be pretty bad, it's not the most cultural place in the world, property prices are pretty high (but similar to London craziness)it can lag behind the rest of the world at times when it comes to technology etc. the lifestyle benefits outweigh any of this stuff though IMO.mSounds like a great opportunity and one I would recommend jumping at!

While it is a wonderful place it is fairly removed from the city and without a train line which in Sydney can be frustrating. If you want the London feel check out Potts Point (Walking distance to Kings Cross Station), Surry Hills (Near Central Station) both have some of the best bars and eating in Sydney while being on the train line to get around swiftly.
I live next to Central Station and still use a car to get away at weekends or running to the shops to pick up more wood for my BBQ!
I left London 3 years ago and have settled nicely in this great little city, good luck on your journey.

If you want the London feel check out Potts Point (Walking distance to Kings Cross Station), Surry Hills (Near Central Station) both have some of the best bars and eating in Sydney while being on the train line to get around swiftly.
I live next to Central Station and still use a car to get away at weekends or running to the shops to pick up more wood for my BBQ!

Time to make a list and sort out the package as a whole with my company.
OH is going to be staying behind and coming out anything up to a month later as I will a) be living in a hotel b) need to go out ASAP, c) need to sort out her VISA.
Query... if someone is working in Australia but not doing an Australians job, do they need a work visa or can they get another visa? OH is just moving to Sydney and taking her job with her so will still be on the payroll in the UK.
i assume your employer is bringing you on a 457 visa, if add your OH as a defacto and she is free to work from whom she wishes. Simple process on a 457 goes on same application.
you have noted you will be doing a lot of flying, some good credit cards here linked to frequent flyers, if you stick with same airline for work, and put all your every expenses on card you will have plenty points each year for local travel or ensuring you don't have to travel steerage if going to UK on holidays!

Although as Im on expenses I will be putting everything through a credit card so that I can gain points that way.
if your flying with Qantas syd/melb hong kong etc, you as the individual should get the points, its worth registering, combined with a card you'll have free flights to NZ or somewhere for holidays very quickly or upgrades if flying home at your own expense on holidays/leave.
believe me I do the Australia - uk/usa/middle east trip 20 times a year and its worth being point savy. it never really matter to me in uk, flights were only short hops generally, to get out of this country other than nz is 8hrs and you don't want to be down the back if you can avoid it!

yes think the membership is a one off $80 or something, the points go to you, not your employer, if you have any influence try and get them to fly you Qantas always, a lot of business do anyway. based on your post above you'll build up a lot of points and status (silver, gold, platinum etc) with the airline quickly, combine it with making all your every day purchases on a credit card you will have a lot points very quickly. no more steerage class travelhttps://www.qantas.com/fflyer/dyn/joinff
