The 350 diesel in my ML is a corker of an engine, current average is 9.2l per100km's after 20k urban km's in just over a year. Only had one service with the next due in a few months. It drops to 7l on a highway run and 14l if I'm pressing on a bit.
Had a 250 diesel hire car for a bit and thought the engine was nice and smooth and lots of torque but no idea on fuel consumtion.

Depending on what sort of running I'm doing I get 50 on open roads, 40-45 cross country and about 45 urban (although I tend to avoid urban running). Probably not as good as the official number,, but for the size of car I'm happy and a great improvement on the previous generation.

Nah, this is for the GF. A friend offered her a Nissan Dualis slightly cheap (as he's left the country) for about the same price, and I thought the Merc was a better fit and maybe could match the fuel costs (better economy, but pricier fuel).You getting rid of the HSV Ben?
The only issue is "diesel". I'm not a fan for cars, and neither is WA it seems.
The dunnydoor will be staying a while. Till Holden work out what V8 they are doing to replace it. then I'll look at the last of the GTS's or the new Corvette/Comaro. And then compare to the Mustang/AMG etc.
Or I'll just chop it in on a nice 964/348.

The 220 is the same engine as the 250 I've read (bolt-ons are probably different), so has potential for mild tuning.

That's my concern. But the equivalent petrol (at the price point) is the 1.8 supercharged engine (135kW / 250nM , 8L/100km vs 125kW / 400nM , 6.7L/100km).Today it's 129c vs 137c for fuel. I'll do some maths.
ETA - I make the oil burner about 10% cheaper on fuel to drive than the petrol. Now, is that enough?

Nice car the W204, Mercedes have really upped their game the last few years both in terms of reliability and handling of their cars.
Isn't that one of the advantages of living in Australia that we get to drive around in petrol's and not have to listen to that horrible tractor sound of a diesel due to cheap fuel.

Still got the HSV for weekends.
I recon 12k km of commuting over the year, then add on weekends away.

Mid 20s. Drove a C200 last night. Was very under engined. The C220 had good torque, and you can't hear the diesel from inside.
Will give a C250 a drive soon. It's the 1.8 petrol, but Turbo (where the C200 is Supercharger).
BMWs are out, Audis are out. Lexus could be a goer, but need to have a look.

I mean for 12,000 a year the actual fuel differences aren't going to be vast as you're never going to stick more than $1400 in fuel in it compared to a diesel at say $1000 - for $400 I'd rather get a non stressed 6 than a potential Diesel problem.

I agree with everything you said. But the thinking is, that we will keep one fruity car, and then we can get one proper eco car. How about a Golf GTI/GTD?

And for the GF, the Merc has the right badge.
But it means I'll have to look at getting another Hilux soon I think, as neither a C220 or the Commodore are suited for an Ikea run.
