Does anyone know much about these?

I wouldnt mind a Radar Detector but know jack all about whats good, whats not and how much to pay.

Also, given the phone use situation I do need to get a Bluetooth kit - any recommendations? Some of the Parrot ones look good.

If you want the best radar detector, the Valentine one gets rave reviews. If you want the best undetectable dectector, then the Bel STI Magnum is the go. You can buy then from Neltronics in WA, or off various sellers on Ebay in the US.

Thanks chaps. Looked at the radar detectors mentioned, helpful, thanks. I see what is $499 in the US is $750 here...

Good stuff on the Parrot John - wasn't sure if thy were good, nice and clear and what you say is reassuring. Like you say will need to get an integrated one for real quality.

I looked into them but to get one that's undetectable (they're illegal in NSW) and covers radar and laser would cost over $3k. Given I somehow have a clean licence I've put this off for a while.

You are talking about two different things here. A radar detector is a passive device that receives signals and alerts a driver. If you get pinged by a laser gun the alert notification you get is that you have been booked (or about to be). With radar you normally get a few seconds warning at least to check your speed. A detector will cost you roughly US$500.

Laser jammers are a different kettle of fish. They are active devices that jam the return signal of a laser gun for a few seconds at least until the gun punches through its defences. I haven't priced these, but it wouldn't surprise me if they were well over US$1000.

I've been looking. I had a Snooper in the UK that saved me a few times.

I'll be heading here :-

The guys advertise on Gumtree, but reckon they can do a good deal if you walk in.

Don't really want a 'blocker' as it'll get me in more trouble, but being able to pickup on the copper asleep in his car with a tripod set up would be nice.

I have a basic handsfree thingy in my Mazda which is just 3 buttons, volume up/down and a "call" button in the middle. I've seen these in others Mazdas attached to the top right inside corner of the windscreen so maybe its a Mazda thing?

Anyway, with the iPhone's very good voice functions you dont really need the screen on offer with some Parrot devices. I can push and hold the call button on the device, or the main iPhone button whilst its in my pocket and call anyone, write a text, read a text etc.

It's a very neat and tidy solution which you dont even notice. Personally I think the parrots look like a nasty after-market make-do device.

I looked at the detectors last year but diddnt bother in the end. If you're "relaxed" enough to not spot the camera or copper with a gun you're not going to get onto the brakes in time to make a difference with a laser. As above, by the time it's alerted you, you've been done.
