Cheap imports on the way? Heres hoping...

Article states:
The Federal Government has also been urged to consider removing a 5 per cent tariff on imported vehicles once the local carmakers close their operations.
The report also recommended a progressive relaxation of restrictions on imports of second-hand passenger and light commercial vehicles.
It said an easing of those restrictions should apply for vehicles from countries that have design standards consistent with those recognised in Australia.
The report said the imported vehicles should be under five years old and a specific $12,000 duty that applies should end as soon as possible.
The Federal Government said it would consider relaxing import restrictions on second-hand vehicles but would ensure Australia did not become a dumping ground for older cars.
Heres hoping...

I doubt it will happen. I suspect the OEM importers will kick up a stink. Ironic that they couldn't care less about Ford, Holden and Toyota closing, but get all up in arms as soon as their "protection" is threatened.
There was a good article in GoAuto a couple of weeks ago:
The FCAI had commissioned a report that showed that Australian customers were not being ripped off by the importers. The example they used was a Ford Focus and somehow they worked out that it was actually cheaper here than in the UK.
Then a BMW/Merc dealer from QLD came out and said the report was nonsense. He did his own comparison using a 750: approx. AUD 100k drive away in the USA, about AUD 110k drive away in the UK, and something like $230k EGC in Aus. He was reported as saying he has been to the plant and they build 1 US car, 1 UK car, 1 Aus car and so on and can't hide behind the "Australian cars are different" approach and that the pricing here was nonsense. He said he didn't understand the pricing strategy here because they could have every Commodore driver in a Merc.
I bet his next meeting at BMW HQ was interesting!
