Like an addict I'm looking at buying another 'toy'. This time I want something that will hold value plus is entertaining to drive.

My choices are:

M3 CSL - I've done many miles and trackdays in one, great car however the recent spate of chassis cracking issues is a concern. Solid investment though.

Porsche GT3 997 - Looking at the red series two that's up for $169K. Looks promising however I'm think an RS is a better investment.

Porsche GT3 RS 997 - I had a viper green one, stupidly sold it for 79k Sterling many moons ago to fund an Ultima GTR (big big mistake cos greens one worth double any other colour now!!), I see there are two for sale, silver and black, both around $229K. Hmmmm.. but really I want the series 2 but they're asking $300K which is too much!

Using man logic and load of finance I could probably stretch to the White Mclaren that's up for $350K, but then I'm not a real fan and I'll always be looking at the 458 (the one I can't afford right now).

Porsche GT3 991 - Can get this, just, as Porsche has some good credit options. Debt doesn't frighten me but depreciation does (I have a Range Rover that's shedding around $30K a year already).

As an outsider I see there's 0% finance TAP on Lotus, sadly these do depreciate like a rock however still worth considering.

Yeah yeah, tough choices I know but there you go...

What would you be swaying towards??

PS, I'll be selling whatever it is in six months due to loss of licence thumbup

Considering the rest of the list I'd wipe the CSL straight off it! They are very cool but not GT3 cool!!!

There's a viper GT3 RS on here for sale just now at £180k redface

What about a Gallardo Balboni or Supperleggera? Or a Ferrari 430?

Out of interest what are the Porsche credit options? I'll hopefully be in a position to spank 200k on a car within the next year or two. I'm desperate for a Ferrari 430 but could change my mind biggrin It was when I read your post on the other thread about balloon payments and man logic that made me wonder if paying one up for a higher cost over a longer time is a better deal than spending 200k cash.

So what's the extra costs incurred on finance etc compared to buying outright. What are the benefits to holding on to a big chunk and getting interest at one end and spending at the other?

EDIT

While I'm at it...

What's the market like at the 200+k range? It's not like many people instantly have that cash to buy a car. Are there deals to be had? When selling do you sell privately or to a garage?! Do garages give a terrible pay back?! Or is there a big enough private market for the right cars?

991 GT3 won't depreciate in 6 months - if you can get one now. Didn't there were any around so should be worth a premium.

What about a 360 CS? Cast iron investment might tempt you to hold onto it for the duration of the ban.

The RS without a doubt.

However....however the current Lotus Exige is rather lovely.

Is this to keep for a long time or just for a little bit?

Would it be rude to derail it with:

The 993 looks exy, I believe a Turbo S recently sold for $150k.

Another great drivers car is the 996 GT2, there's a couple for sale at the moment around the $150k mark.

Also, a nice looking Ferrari 512TR for a spot of Miami Vice cool at $140k.

Or for serious pace how about a Nismo Spec Nissan GTR?

Good shout and one I should've thought of biggrin

That 993 is gorgeous. What a cool car.

I can't get the diablo ad to load here but from the one pic I can see that the wheels are awful. Easily changed though smile

That particular 993 is overpriced by about $50k, it will still be for sale in 6 months.

I had been watching the silver one that has recently had a price drop by $8K (I think), priced around the $150K mark.

While the 993 turbo is a lovely car, the fact they were going for $110K'ish 12 months ago just puts me off spending $150K the owners would like now.

The only Ferrari I like is the 458 and the 355, just never warmed to the 360's front end.

Getting a jag F type for 24 hours from the local dealer, was RRP$220K, will take $150K, fully loaded V6S, worth a thought...

Will update.

Not trying to be contrary but is it really overpriced? Yes they were less just months ago, but if you look at 993 Turbo's worldwide they are all increasing in value and even in the UK they are 80K GBP + and at $150k thats about $80k on current fx rates

Depreciation free driving IMHO.

Ithink so given a 993 turbo S just went for $150k which would be worth significantly more than a standard Turbo. 996 Turbo S's and GT2's are fetching around $130k and standard 996TT's are around $100k for good ones. Ican't see the 993 Turbo in that ad being worth more than $150k but, as ever, it's worth what someone will pay so good luck to them

People have being say this on anything desirable for a long time - oh it's overpriced wont go up (Microsoft shares, McLaren F1, V8 Ferraris from the 80's etc ) and so on.... I see the 993 Turbo as a massive future classic - analogue feel with digital speed - bodes well for the future...

Ps if I had $300k to spend on a car I'd have a 993 Turbo AND a 355 Spider (manual, none of that F1 nonsense) in a heartbeat.

Any thoughts on a Corvette Z06? I'm biased but it's a good car, very good car.

Right, new plan of attack. Can't mention too much but will get approval from PH'ers (but probably not my wife). One little hint, involves Autohaus Hamilton of Sydney and will take a few months...
Will post project up in separate forum in next few months.

Noice! I love that their 'showroom' is at the back of a quiet little industrial area that I never knew existed until I had a look a few years ago.

Anyway, not in any way qualified to comment on the suitability of your potential purchase, but happy these things still happen - look forward to seeing whatever it is tootling around

I would go with the MKII GT3 from that list, it should hold its value reasonably especially if only driven sparingly. The difference between an RS and standard GT3 is negligible.

In a complete reversal and desire for a soft top for summer I brought this:

But to compound my madness I also brought this at the same time:

That basically goes with this I brought a few months back:

Which has made this bloke rather happy I suspect:

I've also put all the warranty documents in a very safe place and my local dealers Service Manager's phone number in my mobile.

V noice - which one is going to tow which one home... biggrin

I'll keep an ear out for the Jag - heard one go past the other day, did sound as good as it looks. Won't be going on any drives to Wisemans any time soon, but will be out for a blat around the Pittwater area some evenings - its been great fun in the rain, empty roads and streaming water...
