Taking a trip on the 4th July ( true independence day away from the home comforts, wife & kids ) and heading North for two weeks of offroad fun, fishing & adventure.
Mate & I are thinking of shipping the car on the Sunlander train from Brissie to Cairns to save on the 16 or so hours driving.
Fly up a day or so later to collect it, fresh for the journey north.
Time is tight so it will save us a day or so.
Anyone been up to the tip, with recommended routes, must sees, do's etc?

I sailed up there. In the early 70s there was enough bulldust even before Cooktown to destroy most cars.\, boats were a better way to go.
I think the rail idea is a very good one. Most of the trip up there is nothing but a real bore, if you don't have time to spend exploring the side tracks. I have done the trip to Townsville quite a few times, but there are still hundreds of signposts pointing to places I've never heard of, that I would love to explore, rather than drive past.
It is those that lead to the good places. On a transportation run, you miss all those, & the kids get whiny.
Have fun up there, it is a great area.
