I need to get some tyres (215/50/R17) soon and recall some discussion somewhere in the past where people said it was cheaper to get them imported from the US and fitted locally - Was that just my imagination or is that really the case?

I looked at Tireack.com and the tyres were undeniably cheaper - chuck in postage and then the fitting here and it became marginal so just found an alternative brand and bought local.

Worth it for something top notch though I would suspect though.

I've been quoted $700 for 245/35/20 x2 and 275/30/20 x2 ..

But they are "Achilles". Named after the god who had issues with the bit of his body that touched the ground.

Loads of mates use them without issues though.

My Mazda 6 has 4x Kumho tyres on it at the moment and I have found them to be very poor in wet conditions. However I'm not sure how much of that it tyres and how much is the poor WA road surfaces after a heavy shower.

Looking at reviews online I'd like to get something else like the Michelin Pilot Sport 3.

A month of petrol/diesel fumes on the road, and then add a dash of water.

I don't think it's the road itself that's the issue.

I'd personally forget the European brands, just on price now (Bridgestone/Michelin etc.) I'd be looking at Asian (Khumo/Toyo) for performance, or cheap local/Chinese and just take the low wet performance hit.

I know they are probably all made in the same factories in China, but I think you pay a (mostly unwarranted) premium for the euro stuff (just like the cars themselves).

I'd put up with the poor wet performance if it were just me but now my wife is driving too I'm concious that her lack of experience could well end in tears (with a baby on board too!)

I'll have a look at some of the Asian brands online and see if I can find something that's well rated for wet roads.

Agreed. I've a mixed bag on my car.

Two same side asymmetric Altenzos on the front, a Falken on one rear, and a Yoko on the other.

It gets a little squirrelly when making progress.
