Used Falcon - what is it worth?
Discussion
I need some advice on the value of our Falcon, because I'm confused.
It is a 2006 BF XT with only 96 and a bit thousand kms on it. We've owned it since July 2007 - it had done 42k km when we bought it (ex-Ford fleet - was actually a Budget hire car). Bought in Noosa, moved to Melbourne in August, so Vic reg since Sep 07.
Ford SH since we got it - overdue for one (on time, not km) but I'll do it before I sell. Rego until September 14, and will have a RWC.
Good points - it is not an ex-Taxi, it hasn't done huge kms, and has been serviced by main dealers since we got it.
Bad point - it was my wife's daily drive, and has some scars as proof. Front bumper scratched (gouged may be a better description) on the LH corner - been touched up but still obvious. Rear bumper - scuffed, cracked, looks ok from a distance but up close it is a bit of a horror show. Driver's door - had a coming together with a driveway post-lamp-thing and as a result has what can be best described as a slight depression and some paint damage on the upper section. The bloke at the bodyshop said the bumpers would be around $300 to paint and about $200 for parts and that the door would need a skin - although I reckon a good used part would suffice if it really had to be sorted - maybe $300 max?
I had a look to try and figure out what to ask for it.....and got confused thanks to the oddity that is the Australian used car market.
Redbook says $4,800 to $6,300 for private sales, but has average kms as 120k to 200k.
Carsales has 6 BF XTs listed as Dealer ads, from between $4,999 (2006 with 197k) to $9990 (2005 with 106k)
Private ads are from $5,700 (2006 with 238k) to $7,399 (2006 with 172k)
Not sure where Redbook get their values from?
I know it isn't worth top $ because it is visually challenged, but then again it is the lowest km one I can find anywhere, which I think compensates (a little).
I'm thinking of asking $6,000 and see how I get on.
Does that seem reasonable?

Redbooks a joke - its like Auction price less 20% and is used by Dealers and Private Buyers to smash you down.
When I was selling my G6T for $34k (eventually let go for $32.5k) some bloke was telling me that the redbook value was $28k. My response of 'are there actually any for sale with same k's and year for $28k?' was met with a 'well no'. My response was along the lines of 'well if you find it, let me know i'll go buy it to sell on for a profit'. Its just a joke figure.
I think your pricing is fair. I'd be inclined to advertised at $5800, sell at $5500 and be done with it. You'll never look back and be stressed you were $500 off but at least it'll be gone. Or get the work done and ad at $6000 sell at $5750 but is the effort worth $250?...
Fyi I bought a 2004 Fairmont with 147k kms on it, full book history, very clean for $4800 but this is WA where cars seem to be a lot more.

Good advice about the start price - sub $6k is probably a good idea. And I was actually thinking I'd let it go for $5,500 just to get rid. I don't understand used values here - things seem to bottom out around the $5k mark (advertised price) - below that it seems to be "good car but engine blown" stuff and they still want 2 or 3k! Nothing seems to drop in to the "15 year old Merc for $500" bracket that the UK has.

I've got a 2009 MkV Golf GTI DSG I'm moving on from - being offered $9-10k, ridiculously low amount. Dealers are crooksGassing Station | Australia | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
