Where to live in Sydney
Discussion
Potentially moving to Sydney, just having a look at the rental market up there but the problem is I have no appreciation for what the suburbs are actually like. I'd like to be north of the bridge as it is easier for work.
Im 34 and unattached, so Id like an area with some life but not too much life.
When I ask Sydneysiders they seem ti be all biased, so I thought Id ask here.

I think it depends more on your leisure activities.
Sydney offers so much to do, but it is widely dispersed.
I lived at Newport so I could easily access the yacht, when I had it on Pittwater. I also lived & kept the yacht at Balmain, when I was racing it.
I lived at Cammeray when the office was at North Sydney, & that was pretty good.
At another time I lived at Cronulla, which gave me a seat on the train to the city, & kept a car in the office city basement car park.
All these options had very real advantages, so I suggest you get to know the place a bit, before making any really permanent arrangements.

If you like the beach and the water, then somewhere around Manly would be good - Manly, Queenscliff, Balgowlah, Fairlight, Freshwater. Lots to do, shops, life, plenty of others around the same age (we were 32 when we moved there) and relatively easy access to the rest of the north shore and CBD. Also large number of rental properties, but not cheap. A bit further away from Manly and prices fall a bit - Manly Vale, Brookvale, Seaforth, Dee Why, Cromer, Colloroy
If you're not bothered about the coast, then no point paying the potential premium for living there - staying lower north shore, try Cremorne, Crows Nest or Chatswood. Further north, depends on what facilities you want/need.
If you can commute across the Harbour every day, then Balmain/Glebe are good options. If you like things a bit grubbier and more, ahem, varied, then try Newtown/Enmore - lived opposite the Enmore Theatre for about 8 months when I was 30 - had a great time.
If you are unattached and likely to spend time out int he city then I would stay south. Eastern Subs are nice, look at Rushcutters / Rose bay, Edgecliff, Potts point, Darlinghurst, Bondi, Waverly, Coogee etc.
Neutral bay and the like on the north side of the harbour are good but there is way more going on south.
If you are past going out in the city, prefer a quieter area then North is fine.
Depends what you are after really. Tell us and we'll give more info!

When I lived in Sydney it was Mosman (south side, near the zoo - north of Spit Junction is a bit crap IMO)
Excellent access to the city, rent surprisingly affordable, good public transport, nice, quiet area. Neutral Bay, Crows Nest, Cremorne all good for similar reasons.
I don't like the East. Inner West (Balmain etc) are good, but crowded. Northern beaches are good if you can handle being out of the city.
I live in Newcastle now. I'm happy with that move. Very, very happy.

I live in Kirribilli and have lived in a few other spots so am happy to provide some commentary.
Where are you expecting to work? The key to living in Sydney is being near transport that will take you to where you work. If you work in the CBD, there are plenty of options. You'll be more dependent on the car if you work outside the CBD or other office centres (such as Chatswood, etc).
