Hi all,

I'm emigrating to OZ at the end of the month.

I'm just going to come over with a suitcase with clothes and stuff and rent for a bit. i don't have furniture or anything, but do have about 5 big boxes of clothes and associated stuff and things (work books and nik naks) that i need to have shipped over.

can anyone recommend a good courier to do this pleasE?

also do you reckon it's worth shipping power tools or buying new ones out there (it's just a circular saw and jigsaw - not particularly high quality ones)

Thanks chaps

I am not sure iff this happens now, but some airlines used to give you a very generous baggage allowance for people emigrating. This might allow you to take more than you think with you.

I used Excess Baggage to send over 3 tea chest sized boxes and a PC. The delivery was quick and the price reasonable, but that wqas 5-6 years ago.

I wouldn't bother with the power tools personally if they are low quality. Have a look at www.bunnings.com.au to decide for yourself.

I don't know if they specialise in personal effects, but I use this company and find them excellent.

We used seven seas worldwide last year to ship a 1/4 container in a big wooden box they call a "move cube". We've recently used them again for 4 large boxes containing the few things we'd left in the UK.

They dropped off the empties with the in-laws, provided bubble wrap for free and collected them a few days later. Shipping will take around 2 months from the UK to Melbourne then a couple of weeks to clear customs and another to be driven to Perth.

Cost for 4 boxes was less than 200GBP.

If you're bringing tools that have been anywhere near anything wooden or dirty, take them apart and clean them more thoroughly than you've cleaned in your life. We read some (probably over the top internet BS) stories online before we packed our stuff so made sure all ours was spotless - Diddnt have any problems at all. Whatever you read on other forums, there is no need at all to cover everything in Jeyes Fluid "Because customs will smell it and know you cleaned it all" rolleyes

I shipped a few tools and sold others, all mine were Bosch and I've been replacing those I sold like-for-like over the last year. Initially the price was about the same as the UK but it's starting to creep up now as the dollar weakens. Have a look on bunnings.com.au to see what it will cost to buy them here - If I were to do it all again now I'd probably ship everything.

Having said that most of the tools I sold were B&Q own-brand which I've since replaced with Bosch/De-Walt so I got a better product out of it.

Thanks or the advice guys.

I'm using seven seas worldwide. The price for 10 regular boxes is just £250 + insurance and customs inspection. I thought that's quite good value.

I'm going to sell my tools. They're just b&q cheapies and it saves cleaning them but I have some nice dewalt cordless stuff which I'll clean and bring.

The rest of the stuff I'm Bringing is just winter clothes and electricals. I have a room full of books and Lego that I'm leaving at parents' for now and I'll bring out if I decide not to come home.

If anyone hails from Swan hill come and say hi.

I did that too. When the call came to pack the Lego they knew I was here to stay!

I used excess baggage...13 tea crates and a bike box some 5 years ago.

No complaints, faultless service. Boxes provided are very well made also. Used them quite a few times to move in Oz since.
