It was interesting to read that the police officer that crashed into a member of the public whilst in pursuit of a stolen car was acquitted yesterday.
How did that happen?

I feel sorry for the policeman. The consequences of his moment of bad judgement will forever haunt him. I'd be surprised if he carries on in the police force. I believe his guilt is sufficient punishment in this case.

But, he ran a red light without knowing if anyone was coming the other way, at a speed great enough to kill one and seriously injure another. How is that not dangerous driving?

Section 61 of the toad traffic act states 'Dangerous driving
(1) Every person who drives a motor vehicle in a manner (which expression includes speed) that is, having regard to all the circumstances of the case, dangerous to the public or to any person commits an offence.'

What am I missing here?

Did he have his siren and flashing lights on at the time? That __could maybe__ give him a get out if he was on duty.

Because speeding is only dangerous when the public do it, even when no one gets hurt. Therefore they deserve punishment.

When the police speed it's not dangerous, even when people die. So there is not punishment.

I agree,

They mustn't be hindered in the pursuit of their public service, but if the correct procedures were not adhered to in the interest of public safety then someone should be accountable.
Having not read the article could it be media spin without presenting the disciplinary facts of the outcome?
