I am looking for new jobs which involve me driving into the city and leaving the car in the carpark in full sun.

Now I dont fancy doing that to the Porsche or Lotus so I have just purchased myself a 2.1 td Pug 406 (1997)

Its got intergalactic mileage, scratches all over and was bought from a backpacker who had just driven it from Albany.

Apparently it will crack well over 800k on half a tank of fuel (research backs that up - record set in 2002 was in a 406 diesel which covered 2348 km on normal roads for a single tank), speedo doesnt work properly no aircon and it was filthy.

I paid $600 including a half tank of diesel (probably about 4 months worth of fuel for the distance I need), 5 months rego, aftermarket stereo and five alloy wheels.

Interior is now spotless, speedo appears to be the usual sensor issue (36 quid for new part in UK and 10 min fitting), aircon is just a loose wire as its intermittant and she runs like a dream. While cleaning it I did however get to hug a giant huntsman while screaming like a girl and I found over $3 in change under the seat.

So far so good!!

How big is the tank? I've never heard that kind of range on anything that doesn't take half a tonne of fuel. Even less so for short journeys.

And I thought you'd sold the Porsche and Lotus?
No, withdrew the Lotus as kinda fell in love with it again - just put so much work in, had a bit of interest though. The Porsche isnt selling despite being priced well. I am happy to keep it as it owes me nothing and just passed the Rego for another year.

see link below for the fuel stuff- .

speedo sort of works, but starts at 60 instead of 0 this means 120 is really 60, 130 is 70 and 140 is 80. Odo works fine .

wierd one that

I am happy to report that today it did just that!

There are decent bargains out there occasionally, sounds like it should be pretty decent disposable transport.

I bought a 99 Volvo S80 a while back for the princely sum of $700 advertised as having 2 blown turbos. In actual fact it just had a blocked oil breather system and return pipe had popped off the block. Couple of hours work stripping the intake off to get at it, $5 worth of hose and clamp and job's a good un. Used it for a good few months as a very comfortable hack and stuck ~5000kms on it. Sold it again when it started leaking gearbox fluid out through one of the driveshaft seals, got $2.5k for it with the fault declared...

If it lasts you till next June there will be a whole load of bargain cars for sale in Darwin when next years Sh*tbox Rally ends up there and they get auctioned off for peanuts.

Cheers.

I've been looking at doing the barge thing myself lately. Seems more and more appealing.

There are still a fair few rolling around from the last one. There is an old Saab still all painted down by the Gardens golf course and I passed some old ford the other day in brown with stbox rally written all over the side lol. They are still working and being used.

Sort what, I made a post of an honest opinion, there are plenty of people in Australia for whom a $600 shed is the only option available, but quite why if you have both a Porsche & a Lotus that you don't want to drive them, is that not what owning a car is for?

And Australia is not so backward that it doesn't have undercover car parks?

It is amazing what you can get sometimes.

My son had reduced the engine in his mothers Cressida to a rattling wreck after borrowing it to tow a trailer of camping gear a few thousand kilometers, trying to keep up with his mates in V8s.

He bought a Cressida from a wreckers for $500 with a guaranteed good motor, to replace her motor. He had to come & get the wheels of his mothers to get it, as they had stripped & sold the alloy wheels of most of their cars.

When she decided to get a new car instead, he then drove that Cressida for over 100,000 kilometers on his daily 80 Km each way commute. 6 years later I still use it around the paddocks.

I have six cars to be exact, five of them I consider to be fairly valuable (15k - 50k australian)

I dont want to drive any of them to a town centre that is exposed to very high levels of sun everyday, regularly frequented by drunk locals/ back packers. I have had three broken into already. There is no cover and I want a car that if I decide to go straight from work and get drunk (as I do fairly often having a busy social life) I dont want to worry about it being left overnight. Its also coming into the wet season which is not ideal weather for a classic, especially as the water can get two feet high within 10 minutes. I dont care about drowning a $600 pug. Try replacing the motor on a classic 911.

I admit that now I am wondering exactly when I would get to drive the car any distance having a young baby, so I will probably use it a couple of times a month and keep it in the pristine condition its in. If it was a rough car then I wouldnt worry so much but as both the lotus and Porsche have had extensive restoration work, I dont want to ruin it.

Where I work now I have under cover parking, my own spot and its only five minutes from home.

Whilst Mod actions is a bit strong I would suggest Genks that if you are unhappy with the quality of the posts try starting a thread of your own....the fact you have posted 27 times in 1-2 years (can't see you post now I am typing yours) says to me you won't bother.

I'd jsut keep lurking if I were you if that's the best you can muster....

Sort what? That you've never started a thread and pretty much any comment you've made in the 12mths on PH has been pithy, abrasive, rude, abrupt and generally commenting like a fking bellend.

Why do you come on here? To troll? To mock? You add nothing, you annoy and just come across like a tool. If you have nothing to add but cutting one liners get a fking comedy gig. Penis.

sunset cruise huh - sounds like a date. Best leave the girls at home.

It was 39 here yesterday and very high humidity, was unbearable for me and I have only experienced that a couple of times in four years. Was too hot to even check the fusebox. Hopefully it rains this weekend and cools down for your visit.

I will try and sort out the rods too, even if we cant get out in the boat we can chuck a line in somewhere. Maybe put a couple of crab pots in too.
