I rang around a couple of insurance companies and got the following:

Shannons- about $800 based on 2 days/month driving - I'm a 43 year old with no convictions, speeding fines (yet, touch wood).
Lumleys - $about $650 but for a max value of $30k for the car, which would never cover the replacement cost.

I was paying about £220 for a limited mileage scheme in UK - is insurance always so much more here?
Anyone any ideas of who else I should be speaking to? I want a good reputable insurer who will look after me if the unthinkable happens.

Friend of mine is with Justcar and they seem cheap, no claim experience though. He had a 997C4S with them then switched to a 997GT3 and the premium went down strangely...

When I first moved to oz I found my premium was way cheaper than the UK, around 200 quid for my S2000 with a guaranteed value at the time of $45000. Now with convictions and 9 points left it is $1200 (doubled in real terms in 5 years). Not sure if Perth is cheaper than other states as I moved but I think the premiums have increased by over 10% a year even if I had no convictions.....

Dunno about classic stuff, but my Hilux is about $550 and the HSV is $900.

All mods included and guaranteed value.

With SGIO (in Perth).

If in Vic I'd say try the specific classic car section of RACV, although needs to be garaged etc to be eligable for their classic car policy.

I've always found them much cheaper than Shannons or Lumley although their eligability criteria is stricter (15yo+, needs to be garaged, limited KMs, etc).

Used to have everything through Shannons then their pricing went silly, moved everything over to Lumley for a while until getting comparative quotes for the eligable cars from RACV classic. Now have 5 through RACV and 3 through Lumley, only downside being all the RACV ones are seperate payments rather than the Lumley batch is a single combined policy.

My 911 and Esprit turbo are both with Shannons - agreed value of the two at $40k each. I pay $160 a month with no driving restrictions other than I cant use the car more than four days a week each.......... but no way of keeping track/ record. In reality I use them alternately so they dont get used more than four days a week.

I am 34 with a couple of speeding points (both under 5k over the limit) on a road that jumps 60-70-80-70-80-70 within 6k, except on a Sunday where it is 60-70-80-70-80-70-50-70 - which is where I got done........... twice, nothing but a money making machine.

For the same level of cover in the UK I was paying 165 quid a year (albeit lower agreed value for obvious reasons)

On top of my premium I also then have to pay CTP which is nearly 800 a year due to age on both my cars.

I had the Triumphs with Shannons, & the rest withy Just. I went to them because they were the only ones who would insure the 306 Peugeot convertible with my 19 [at the time] year old daughter as a driver, for anything near a reasonable price. They would not cover the Triumphs at all.

When the 7 was hit mildly up the back, making a claim on Shannons was almost a pleasure, despite a ridiculous cost for a new bumper cover. When my rates for the next year didn't change, I was so impressed I gave them all the others. It cost less than $100 extra, & the confidence from that good claims experience is easily worth that much to me.

I'm in the same 'Age' Group. My car was 198 pounds to insure in the UK and now I'm with Shannons. Agreed value of $70k and $750 / yr to insure. The only benefit of Shannons is that they don't quiblle over claims. The last 2 people I know that have made claims thru shannons, their (Shannons) response was 'Repair costs are not an issue - whatever it takes'. I have never heard this from any other insurance company in Australia. So I go thru Shannons for piece of mind more than anything.

Try a broker that can go direct to Lloyds. The only one I know is http://www.wgib.com.au/

I am with Shannons and nothing could have been further from the truth for me. I had a simple cheap repair to a bumper that was caused by a 3rd party. As I was stationary at the time it was pretty easy to work out who was at fault. I also got all the details and got a police report, even though that was not a requirtement for this bump.

As the repair was about the same cost as my excess I was told that I should just pay the repair expenses myself as it was not worth claiming. I responded that it was not my fault and I would not be liable to pay for the excess anyway. 6 MONTHS later I finally got permission to get it sorted, and elected yo uuse one of their approved repairers rather than my own just because I didn't want any comeback on me in case the work was substandard at my chioce of repairers.

I personally only went with Shannons as they will insure any legal car modifications, something I no longer feel is required.

Shannons were pretty useless the one claim I did need to run through them, non-fault so cost wasn't an issue but they couldn't provide a recommended repairer for bodywork on the TVR since it is fibreglass.

Ended up going through one I picked (who do all the work for the Lotus & Ferrari main dealer in Melb so I thought they would have been ok) who left the car sitting outside with the bonnet off and windows open in torrential rain thus resulting in the interior getting soaked.

Shannons basically washed their hands of having anything to do with it since they weren't on their recommended list even though they couldn't give me a recommended one to go with.

I heard they were taken over by a large insurer - was this before or after that? Either way, not a good way to conduct business!

Thanks ariddell, spoke to RACV and they quoted $530- much better. I'm liking the fact you've got 8 classics. Nice touch. I've got some work to do!
