Hey,
I did mine into Vic back in 2007 so a while ago now, I'd say only bring it if you want to keep it for the long term, values seem to have improved for good ones back in the UK over the last couple of years and they are not something that would sell quickly in Oz.

I don't regret having brought mine out at all, but have no plans to ever sell it so the cost of import has faded into insignificance compared to how much fun I have had with it here since.

Cheers,

Al

Way less than that, about $3k max in local charges for compliance, rwc, rego and stamp duty.

Even including the shipping, import duty etc I still don't think it cost me over about $9k all up to bring in back then.

Thanks for that. Going to shop around for some shipping quotes. Hopefully they value it nice and low to keep the import duty down!

Rory,

I got it slightly wrong, applications must be made for the Import approval within 6 months of arriving in Oz- not the actual shipping of the car. Although you were over four years late applying for it, not sure exactly why it was granted- someone made a mistake somewhere. I have had a read up and I think its going to be risky to be honest.

Dropped you an email but its worth going up here. I made my application outside of the 6 month window, I actually think it was around a year from getting permanent residency so I had been here for some time, circa 3 years. They do say on the website that they look at cases individually so for whatever reason mine went through. I did have to put a story together on why I had not applied sooner, whatever the reason it was approved.
Had a chat with them this morning and was told I could import tomorrow or in a years time and it would make no difference, would all go through fine as I have the approval in place. Hopefully this is accurate. Are there any other departments that get a say who could cause problems? If its just DIT I will be going for written proof that this is not an issue prior to starting the process.

I am thinking of the various customs departments specifically that deal with the vehicle upon arrival. They are particularly anally rententive, to the point of seizing one car from me as I would not disclose the type of aircon gas within the vehicle. As stated over 100 times to them- the car does not have aircon. I got it back weeks later but still had to pay all inspection costs. There are a number of different customs agencies that could get involved and frequently do- as most on here who have imported will tell you.
The approval is the hardest part to get but is by no means a guarantee. There has been a mistake which is great for you but you run the risk of it being picked up later and rectified then being lumbered with the costs.

I really dont want to be a doom monger but you need to be aware of them, The more TVR's here the better as far as I am concerned.
