I'm off to Sydney for work and the wife is coming along for the ride - Other than the obvious Opera House, bridge and zoo, what are the best things to do? We'll have Wednesday afternoon and Thursday free.

Staying at Shangri-La, The Rocks.

You've got to do the Manly ferry ride, & walk across from the wharf to the surf beach. Not much left to Sydney after that.

You could pop in on my Ex and grab my Leica back for me.

- Walk around circular quay, past the opera house to Mrs McQuarrie's chair, keep going on the coastal path and at the end turn right and walk back to the city through the botanical gardens.

- As already posted, take the ferry to Manly, have a beer and some yabbies in Doyles (tourist central, but you have to do it), get the ferry back, the rest of Manly is terribly overrated.

- Take the train to Bondi Junction, then grab a cab to Bondi, face the ocean, turn right and follow the coastal path to Covelly, get a cab back to Bondi Junction or the city (if you only do one walk, do this one, it takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours and is just lovely).

- Walk the other way round circular quay into the rocks and seek out one of the many heritage pubs, try to get to the Lord Nelson in Kent Street (has its own micro-brewery)

Another vouch for the Manly trip. Good for lunch as well - i'd recommend Manly Wine, Hugo's, Le Kiosk or if you're just after a pub style thing I really rate going around to the 16ft Skiff Club...

Have you considered doing a Bridge Climb?

Something else that's very touristy but worth a look is going up Centrepoint Tower (or Westfield Tower) which is well worth a look.

For decent "look where I was" shots of the Opera House, go to the top of the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay and walk to the end.

Echo all of the above suggestions too.

Don't even think about Luna Park - good manner prevent me expressing a view on that...place.

Either The Spit to Manly Walk (never the other way - the pubs are in Manly) finishing with a beer at the 4 Pines and then ferry to CQ. Or walk Coogee to Bondi. Both nice coastal walks though Manly one a bit longer and harder.

If you catch the ferry to Manly have a wander or catch the bus to North Head for a view, or walk north up the beaches to Dee Why and bus back to Manly.

I'm a fan of the Northern Beaches - no need for a new Spit Bridge, that I can see...biggrin

Taronga Zoo is a bit pricey unless zoos are your thing but it does have some great views.

Basically stick close to the harbour or the beach.

Great choice of hotel - one of my favorite evenings was enjoying the view from the bar at the Shangri-La with a bottle of Coonawarra red overlooking the harbour.

Highly recommend the pizza at 'The australian Hotel' - the rocks, for lunch - they do croc/kangeroo etc. Take the ferry to Manly Beech for the surfing. Lovely.

If you like sushi, make sure you go to the fish market.

AND - the Bondi to Coogee beech walk is well worth it. Defo must do.

Thanks for all the ideas. I'm currently on the train back From my meeting in Newcastle and our flight is Friday morning so plenty of time to do much of the above.

Went for the hotel because I always stay with them whenever I can. The room has an opera house view which is nice too.

I'll have you know I have been unlucky enough to pass through Sydney 4 times in the last 10 years, & from those experiences I think I was being very kind to the place.

It was OK in the 60s & 70s, quite a bit which I lived there, but even then the only really good things about the place was the harbor, Broken Bay, Warwick Farm & Oran Park race tracks, & the Putty road.

Highlight for us was dinner at Altitude - 36 floors up with this not-too-shabby view!
