Totyota Kluger seems pretty popular if you want the look and feel of a 4x4:

Kia SUVs are popular here too.

My son is very jealous of you in WA.
He is looking for a low mileage, crew cab with canopy, 4X4 turbo diesel Ford Ranger.
He has an extra cab, but now needs proper rear seats, but still the load space for sporting & camping gear. He has has experience of navy owned Rangers which he reckons stand up to abuse better than anything else the navy owns.
He's found they are much cheaper in WA than in the east.
Eldest daughter now drives a Nissan Navara crew cab diesel for the same reasons.
Have a look at some crew cabs, before you spend your cash, they may suit you.

I think I'd go Ford Territory
You seem to be able to get quite a bit for around $20k. Choice of 2WD/AWD, vaarious engines, and they're half decent and very popular so servicing and parts shouldn't be a problem.
I looked at those but couldn't get over the terrible taxi Falcon BA interior. Shame as quite ok for general use.You seem to be able to get quite a bit for around $20k. Choice of 2WD/AWD, vaarious engines, and they're half decent and very popular so servicing and parts shouldn't be a problem.
