Looking for advice/recommendations for an SUV for under 20k similar to Hyundai ix35, not to familiar with what is out there or what to avoid.

Not fussed on spec just a safe family wagon.

Totyota Kluger seems pretty popular if you want the look and feel of a 4x4:

Kia SUVs are popular here too.

I'm currently looking at a Murano with the possible of:

Murano
CX7
Nitro
Cherokee

I was looking at the 35, Dualis etc and they just aren't big enough boot wise for pushchairs, animals, shopping etc...

I'd take a CX7 out of that lot.

Cx7 - I know what you mean but a) it looks quite dated and b) the murano has a st load more equipment.

However it's not a bad choice by any means and I'd be happy with one.

Considering this line in isolation, surely you should just pick the one with the best ANCAP crash rating?

My son is very jealous of you in WA.

He is looking for a low mileage, crew cab with canopy, 4X4 turbo diesel Ford Ranger.

He has an extra cab, but now needs proper rear seats, but still the load space for sporting & camping gear. He has has experience of navy owned Rangers which he reckons stand up to abuse better than anything else the navy owns.

He's found they are much cheaper in WA than in the east.

Eldest daughter now drives a Nissan Navara crew cab diesel for the same reasons.

Have a look at some crew cabs, before you spend your cash, they may suit you.

If he wants to drive over in a GTR, I'll take it off his hands and he can drive back in a Ford.

I think I'd go Ford Territory

You seem to be able to get quite a bit for around $20k. Choice of 2WD/AWD, vaarious engines, and they're half decent and very popular so servicing and parts shouldn't be a problem.
I looked at those but couldn't get over the terrible taxi Falcon BA interior. Shame as quite ok for general use.
