I may need a tow car next year for interesting reasons.

So, I'm looking at options.

It will be needing to tow around 1000kgs.

I still do a stupid amount of kms for work, so will be getting a second car. I'll either go fun car that can tow that amount for weekends (e36 M3) + smaller car for work (maybe something as tedious as a Lexus CT200) or get something like an Alfa 159 JTD wagon for work and towing duties and something smaller and fun for weekends.

The M3 is listed as not having any towing capacity - but the e36 328i is listed as having a 1600kg towing capacity. Does this mean it is illegal to use them as a tow car, or just that the design of the bumper means that a towball was never offered?

I know there was a guy in Victoria in an old car club I was in years back who used his as a tow car.

Not interested in getting a ute or a 4x4.

Perhaps they just don't want their up market sporting thing to be seen working like a common car.

Could they have lightened the back so the M? When Ford put coils in the Falcon they took so much structure out of the car from the axle line back, that people towing the same trailers as they had behind an XD had the things cracking under the rear window.

I once towed a very light horse float , [less than 1/2 ton], with a couple of miniature ponies about 350Km behind a Camry. It was never the same again, I'm sure it stretched it.

On the other hand I towed my Brabham, all up near 1.5 tons from Sydney to Bathurst & back behind a 1600CC Hillman Minx. Did everything quite well, except race Frank Matich, with his SR3 behind a Pontiac GTO.

Of course what you really need is a Falcon evil.
