I have not long been in Oz and am just about to finish an awesome motorhome trip from Perth round the coast to Melbourne with my family. I am now at the point when I need to be looking for cars to buy for the wife and I.

Please can someone explain to me what I need to be looking out for in the State of Victoria - What is involved with getting REGO and an RWC? How expensive is it likely to be and how do I 'de-risk' the purchase? ie If I buy from a dealer, will that have REGO and RWC if it is a 'Drive away, no more to pay' deal?

No idea on Vic, but if the price is drive away no more to pay it's as it says.

My LR purchase came with 12 months rego included.

The seller is responsible for supplying a roadworthy certificate if selling a car with registration. The car must be unregistered to be legally sold with out the roadworthy. It is supposed to guarantee the vehicle is road worthy, but there are too many horrer stories to depend on one as surety of a cars condition. It has nothing to do with mechanical condition of the drive train. Think MOT.

You have to transfer the registration to your name with in a certain time. You will have to pay a transfer fee & stamp duty. I'm not sure about Victoria these days, but it cost me $2000 in Qld on a $30,000 purchase.

They can have any length of registration still current, My S2000 had only 5 days left, & was supplied at suitable discount.

Drive away, no more to pay does mean some government charges are paid by the dealer, but I'm not sure which.

Get onto the relevant state government web site, & find a registration transfer form. This will show what you have to pay.
