Note to mods - Please dont move this to finance as it's an Australia specific topic.

I'm looking to have a dabble in the share market and have been looking at Commsec's online service which is currently offering $600 (12 trades, 3 months or $600 total whichever is first) brokerage fees for free. However, I dont know anything about any of this and done want to end up with something that is a nightmare to administer or has heaps of hidden fees and charges along the way.

The plan is to initially buy about $500 in BHP/Rio/FMG shares and just watch them out of interest.

So do any of you use this or a similar service?

If you've only got a small amount to play with ($500) IMO there's little point as brokerage fees (after 3 months) will eat into your profit (or loss) significantly.

Have you considered CFD? Less transaction fee, and is a lveraged product enabling larger gains (and larger losses) - just make sure you fully understand it & the stop losses.
