Importing under the Pre-89 or Personal Import Schemes
Discussion
I'm getting a flavour of Aussie bureaucracy already - I cannot import my 911 under the Personal Import Scheme as I do not have the 'right' visa. I will be emigrating to Oz under a 461 visa which is an NZ Citizen Family Relationship (ie I am married to an NZ Passport holder).
Spoke to the vehicle imports section of Infrastructure and they told me that I could import under the Pre-89 scheme if my vehicle is manufactured before 89. It was 1st registered in Jan '89 but I reckon it must have been built in 88 even though it has an 89 code in the VIN (this is the model year I think). Got hold of Porsche in Germany and they will be confirming when the car was made. All good, I hope!
Vehicle Imports told me to speak to Aussie customs, which I did and they told me that the value of the car would be assessed there. At one point when a lady thought I was on hold, her colleague told her that my visa was temporary and she said "that's fine, we'll just take his money"!!!!
Does anyone know how this is calculated under the Pre-89 scheme, or have experience of importing under this scheme - I understand it is different to the Personal Import scheme and I need to work out which is the most cost effective as I (apparently!) can import under that scheme, under my wife's name as she is an NZ passport holder.
I'm now running out of time before we leave for Perth and this bureaucratic nonsense is starting to irritate.....

I have imported a 911 and an Esprit Turbo under the pre-89. firstly that is bullst. Value of the car does not need to be assessed here, the legislation states that a recent value in country of origin is fine, its also accepted (was legislation until last year) that if purchased within the last six years the original receipt is also ok. On a 911 might be best as they have been appreciating the last few years.
I supplied my original receipt from the previous year for both and not an issue.
personal import is the easiest scheme but if the car isnt in her name now you need to change it and wait a year before she qualifies under the personal scheme, the pre-89 is pretty straight forward and your easiest option I think for you.
If you want help, I can talk you through each stage and help you ship your car (used to do it for a living). I charge a slab of speckled hen ($150) as opposed to a forwarding agent ($5k+).
I also know alot of loop holes the agents don't which will save you a small fortune.
The registration date won't give you an issue, I just brought in a Bentley first registered on the 1st Jan 1989 too.
I sent a copy of the Rolls Royce build record sheet along with the import app, but suspect they'd use common sense that a car first registered on that date would have to have been manufactured in 1988 anyway.

I bought them specifically to bring in a couple of weeks before they left the UK so 10% GST and 5% duty on the UK purchase prices. Did get quite a bit of questioning and had to provide a fair bit of detail before customs were happy the values were genuine however as 1 was an eBay purchase. Easy enough to show the cash transfers for payment etc though so no biggy, but they are definitely on the lookout for people trying to declare false values.
Yep, no LCT on these, stamp only payable when it comes to registration rather than at import time.

they are very reluctant to accept ebay buys. I struggled with mine but sorted it with some sensible chat. As long as you are genuine and remain polite its not an issue. They are decent guys in my experience at customs.
Even helped me catch my agent out trying to commit fraud.

Which crack-smoking wizard put that SEVS list together? No Pork but a full compliment of marginal Toyotas and a Rover 75. Literally WTF?
Couldn't agree more. No Porsches WTF.Therefore, someone actually wanted to import a Rover 75 so badly that they jumped through all the hoops to get it in. It was approved and so added to the list.
I suspect that most Porsches after 1989 were available new in Oz and so not required to be on the list, or were personal or pre 89 imports.

just because its on the list doesnt mean it was ever imported. For example there are a number of vehicles on there as people applied to import them, they were approved.
The applicant then contacted the RAWS who informed them that they were the first to import this type of vehicle...... therefore they are liable for all the engine emissions tests. These tests cost approximately $100k.
Car never imported, still on the list. Danger is someone sees it on the list, presumes an easy import and brings one in to find they are liable for this.
I found this out whilst trying to get a Tuscan S onto the list, they would have put it on but I rang them and asked them not to.
You should be fine, so long as the car has had no major modifications.

The date of manufacture is the date the vehicle was first driven or moved from the manufacturer's production line or production facility, after the vehicle's body shell and powertrain assemblies were joined. This is equivalent to the concept of the build date (as developed and used by Australia's automotive industry). To qualify for this scheme the date of manufacture is to be before 1 January 1989.
Kind of OT, but relevant question. Has your OH ever lived in Australia? If she lived there before 2001 then some of the same restrictions don't apply. Could be worth investigating.Edited by vetrof on Friday 22 March 17:21
