Hello all,

I've been reading through lots of threads on here with great interest, the info I've gained; mostly subjective as it is so far has been great. Appears there's some genuinely helpful ex-pats on here so thanks in advance.

I don't want this thread to be too general and I'm sure there will be other questions coming from the wife and I but this one can focus on the car.

I've read through 7805 car export/import thread and is great for info but the final export figure almost made me fall off my sofa. It seems that most of the cars that are taken over are high end/expensive and I believe the more the car is worth the more it can cost to export due to duties and taxes?

My car is Dec 89' Toyota Celica GT-Four which can be seen here

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

The car is only worth around £3,500 / £4,000 but is a very rare Lightweight model which I'd be devastated to have to sell here, I guess I'm rather sentimental and would love to think I could take/bring it with me.

We'll have some decent capitol from the sale of our house but economics will have to play a part. If it's going to cost $16,000 to import a 3.5k car it seems ridiculous to contemplate.

The modifications may also cause an issue? Things like coilovers (BC) stainless exhaust and boost controller may cause issues?

So, am I mad to consider it or is there a 'under 5k cars go free' clause I've missed somewhere

Thanks all

James

Have a word with Iron Lady Imports, they do a load of Jap stuff from Japan and will give you rough numbers.

Hi James.

Used cars sell here for many times what you'd get in the UK so if you can import it, you'll save a fortune on buying an equivilent upon arrival.

Take a look at this, for example: http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/toyota-...

I sold 2 cars before moving here and wish I'd kept them both, even though they were pretty dull (Audi and Lexus)

It certainly won't cost you that much to bring it, I'd prob estimate $8-10k would have it over here and fully on the road.

Mods won't be such a big deal with it being a personal import, only needs to meet a subset of the ADRs for the time of manufacture so thankfully you'll be spared all the emissions related nonsense as I'm presuming it doesn't have cats.

Well worth doing, especially if you intend to keep it long term, unusual desirable stuff sells well in the classic car market out here.

Cheers guys that's all good to read.

Matt I looked at Iron Lady Imports, seems like they can take a lot of the pain out of the paper work, I thought their $990 was all in at first! Obviously not but still could prove very useful.

200bhp - eek I saw a few other sales websites and they were looking for around $10,000 for a Carlos Sainz, nothing too special. Dear me. At least it'll be worth more than tuppence if I ever decide to sell it.

ariddell - Hopefully the wife will agree to set aside that sort of cash for the process, if she wants the dogs; I'm having the car grumpy

We're still in the very early stages yet people if any has any interest at all, but we're relatively resolute in our decision to move. I just hope my skills transfer (the wife is a Radiographer for the NHS so no probs there) Where to relocate to is a pretty major one as well but that's another thread for another time.

Cheers so far guys, the Celica will live on it seems.. Any more info grately received thumbup

I was discussing the import situation with at the weekend, and I would say if your car is known and supported here then it is probably worth bringing. It's still a frustrating process, but if you do your sums or you want to bring it regardless then go ahead.

I'm not sure it's worth bringing over something specialist, or at least it's a major pain in the arse.

It seems like there's a thriving GT-Four enthusiast base over there. Maybe not the level of expertise in the UK I'd wager but who knows? The good news is 99% of the mechanicals are shared with the standard moddel so parts etc should be easy enough to come by.

Just need to get her reliable and up to spec before moving it out..

hey,

I have imported a few cars personally and previously used to ship cars before I was a cop (albeit from abroad into the UK).

I can provide you with all the advice you need and will save you money over any import agent. I charge (gentlemans agreement) a slab of beer.

Rough estimate off the top of my head - for a car worth 3k GBP (we would aim to get it as close to that as we can for shipping purposes) I would estimate approx $3814 to port, on top would be Rego and stamp duty which varies state to state but is usually about 3% of the vehicles value.

I am pretty confident I could help you get your car here, to your door and on the road for around $5k (3200 gbp) including collection from your door in UK, marine insurance and delivery to a port metro area.

It will be worth alot more than that when landed as previously stated.

If it helps my last car (few months back) was an 88' Esprit Turbo with many similar mods. Currently going through registration but only issues are handbrake, chassis rust (surface) and kinked brake line. No issues with the Mods whatsoever.

Hi James,

That makes for very interesting reading, and thank you for your offer I may well take you up on it. Good to see it can be done for reasonable money if you're in the know and I'm sure we could come to an arrangement of payment slightly above and beyond a crate. It sounds like I should ensure the Celica is in tip top working order and free or rust etc before it travels.

I just need to check you're not going to steal the bloody thing from me tongue out

Cheers bud thumbup

hey, yes I am up in the NT- not through choice though.

we initially aimed for SA but were made an offer we couldnt refuse. Lots of money and a passport within four years.
Its a very different place from the rest of Australia- fortunately prior to moving here we travelled nearly every part so know it pretty well.

Its an 'interesting' place as Custard tart will back up. I really want to drive through the centre sometime this year down to Adelaide to visit the last place on my list- Uluru.

Well I'm sure I can throw a mix of malt and yeast based beverages in the back of the car on the way over.

I remember waiting for departure from heathrow to Singapore not long ago and got talking to a south country (uk) chap, nice guy but he had a cool crazy stare that I won't forget in a while, he said; amongst other things he'd spend months at a time isolated on a ranch in the NT. He said not much to do but drive around in a 4x4 and annihilate various rodents etc with shotguns. He also said depending on what you get bitten by, you either drive as fast as you can to the 'local' hopsital or knowing you have 10 mins to live, write down any last thoughts you may have for the next person to find biggrin

Only spoke to him for 10 minutes but I'll never forget that guy, seems like he'd lived more than most.

Wherever you are mate thumbup
