Before we came over I'd read a lot on PomsinOz and elsewhere that sausages in Australia were terrible and we should make the most of them before we left the UK. Obviously I took their advice and had a really nice bangers and mash the night before we flew.

Having been here a while now I just dont see what they're on about - Nice sausages are all over the place in Woolworths!

Am I missing something? (something that's not nice sausages)

It may just be that you've never had a really good sausage!

...and that's a sentence I never thought I'd type smile

Standard UK sausage = pork = good
Standard Aussie sausage = beef = bad

Yes you can get decent sausages here but you can bet they're not at your next BBQ/Bunnings/polling booth/sizzle.

Sure I have seen some of that on the shelves in my local Coles in the import section with Alpen, Weetabix and Mushy peas! Is that not the proper stuff?

This basically.

I've found the food to be better here personally. But then I go to a great local butcher.

If you buy cheap sausages here they're nigh on inedible. Horrible rusk and fat filled beef sausages. If you nuke them on the barbie you can just about get away with it.

Butchers have great sausages though. I like the "italian" sausages and you can get cumberlands too that I wouldn't know the difference from the ones in the UK.

I think it's people wanting the 99p a pack irish pork sausages and being disappointed at the beef alternatives.

I've found pretty much everything I thought I'd miss:
Bacon - the pre cooked stuff is actually fine once grilled/fired back to life.
Beans - Buy "English recipe" Heinz and you're laughing. The Aussie version is distinctly odd tasting.
Branston Pickle - Use to go through a jar a week. Healthy eating and the price of cheese and pickle means my jar has lasted 3 months now!
Love the range of Asian food on sale, particularly in the dedicated shops.

I'm not missing any food stuffs at all, just eating healthier and making sure meat is treated right being as it's pricey.

Helman's Mayonnaise... Imported from the UK, found in Woolworths (Perth) smile Bonus

Also they do sell Irn Bru here, and if people are missing food so much, just go and hit the British Shop, every city has 3 or more and they even import frozen, UK sausages for anyone who doesn't like the garbage beef ones here smile

Oh, and they stock Walker prawn cocktail crisps yes

I have always been told that its due to the higher food standards in Australia, they dont allow the same large amounts of offal to be used so it has to have a much higher meat content.

Yeah, and I've been told that due to higher road safety standards the ISOFIX child seat standard isn't acceptable for Australia, so you have to use a "top teathered" child seat.

Meat content of Aussie sausages is about 75% IIRC from the last pack of Barbeque Sossies I bought! I stand to be proven wrong, but I don't think that's the reason. The beef sausages certainly taste like they're 80% lips and aholes.

Yeah, the local brewed stuff isn't the same though. Think the imported proper stuff has been stopped as the caffeine content would classify it as an energy drink here.

I make proper pork sausages with 95% pork loin and these are the cheap ones.
The free range are dearer and rare breed more so.
Then I not in Aus.

I have never heard this and the sausages at my local butchers in Edgecliff are amazing.

Says more about PomsInOz I'd say.

I've had some great sausages in Aus - even the chicken ones were pretty good, just make sure you stay away from the cheap crap.

I need to buy a BBQ, ant recommendations without breaking the bank?

I was told Everdure, and whatever you can afford.

I've a 4 burner, with a wok side burner (never used). It managed 18 people on Xmas day with ease.
It's half hot plate and half grill.

Take me about 10mins from turing it on, to getting a steak on the plate.

He he he, that's not a Barbeque, that's an outdoor kitchen!

I plumped for a $150 Bunnings Kettle BBQ. In my mind, if you've not had to light a fire, you're not Barbequeing. Takes about an hour to get up to pace with Redheads finest charcoal.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love a massive outdoor cooking station, but it's more in the "10 year aspiration" list than the glorious 5 year plan at the moment!
