Ok having hindsight, the wife and I are heading back to the UK in about 12 months after getting our passports to spend more time with close family.
We intend to return to Aus in two or three years, leaving enough in the bank here to do so prior to going (about $30-40k)

This leaves me about $60k to move back (already have house and a job to go to) so am thinking about investing it in a car to return with as a personal import(with a view to sell for huge profit)

I am currently thinking

Aston DB9 V12 - holding out for a manual only
Bentley Continental GT
Ferrari F355

any other cars I should consider for around the 40k gbp mark?

If you're going to keep then sell I'd go for the 355. Has the classic 80s/90s Ferrari look without being a dog to drive.

Bentley CGTs fill me with meh, but you can get them for 30k now so might be a money maker.

I'll be interested as well. I'm going back in April for about 18 months, but I just want a nice car to drive and not really looking to make large amount of money selling it.

Also thinking about a DB9 or Vantage or Bentley GT, but the problem will be selling it back in Oz. For some reason, people here don't like imported european cars so the price you get will be about 2/3 of the price for a locally delivered car.

I'm also thinking about an Arial Atom or some exotic/desirable car that is never sold here and are rarely imported.

I wanted a TVR Tuscan S but after seeing the 2/3 here in Aus that after months are still for sale I decided no.

The AM command a very strong price and there doesnt seem to be any difference in prices, the F355 is probably a better long term investment and a car I would much rather prefer so will keep an open mind I guess and buy whats best at the time.

hopefully the recession continues

Audi R8
Nissan GTR
Dodge Viper

any of the new Mustang/Corvette cars

The big SUV's seem to be popular too. BMW/Audi, even Toyota LCs as they keep their value.

I will look into the R8, the rest do not interest me as I will be using it in the interim- the american cars dont have a high enough resale price.

I want around a 85-100% profit and there are a few that will manage this, the Aston currently being favourite

Got you. The R8s fetch a premium 160k. So I'd expect the Gallardo to be similar.

Bentley Continental, what Maserati are about that level?

Saw a new Shelby Mustang in the dealership on the weekend $180k (no idea on a UK price).

F355 would be a good one but costly to run in the UK compared to the DB9. A Vantage convertible might be a good bet too? Also maybe look at a 996 GT3 RS if available in budget? I'd expect this to be appreciate over the next 3 years.

I am not really a Porsche fan despite owning three over the last few years, they just dont interest me in that way.

Since yesterday I have studied the R8 in detail but to me its just an Audi and I just don't want one the same way I do the DB9 or the F355 and as I am going to be owning it about 2 years thats pretty important.

I think a F355 will be ok as long as all the belts have been done- don't seem to be too needy compared to some others. The DB9 does have back seats which means sensible room for kids but...... they all seem to be boring colours, I would love one in Viper Blue or candy apple red.

I have fallen off the BCGT wagon, its just not pretty enough and screams footballer.

I was thinking about a Rangie sport but after reading all the horror stories about reliability I will give them a berth.

I think a new Shelby would be out of my range and in the UK would only be a lefty- I would have to pay for the conversion in Australia wiping out a large amount of profit.

Just checked the Gallardo - around 20k over my budget frown

I know of one in Victoria. I can't see why not because clubbies are regularly imported and registered for road use.

Mercedes s65l

Rareas hens teeth here and gobsmackingly expensive.

A pittance, comparatively, back in the UK

Are you buying for a return or for you to enjoy?

If a return the German stuff goes down well.

Perhaps it's ok under Personal Import, I recall reading they were struggling to come in as 'regular' new cars due to emissions/ADR etc etc.

It will be for me to enjoy for approx two years then to sell after importing as a 'personal' import.

I already have the Chimaera which will probably be coming back as my personal car and the other being whatever I decide to get.

I have time yet as in no rush to buy but it is good to start looking

for me it would be too hard to sell on, not many people willing to pay $150k plus for a six year old mercedes hence the ones in classifieds still there after months.

A ferrari or Aston would be easier to shift which is ultimately the goal
