Did a quick search but couldn't find anything.

Just wondered what the process for buying a car is in NSW. Is it a postal system like the UK or do you have to go somewhere and physically sign the car over like in the UAE?

Would appreciate a few bullet points to make sense of the bureaucracy.

Cheers!

Here's the car buyers handbook..

http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/pdfs/About_us/Pu...

But the quick guide for transfering registration is:

To transfer the registration of a vehicle, you must visit a motor registry and provide the following:

• the certificate of registration for your vehicle, completed and signed on the back by the seller
• proof of your identity eg. your driver’s licence
• the receipt showing that you are the new owner
• the transfer fee and stamp duty cost.

You have 14 days to transfer the Certificate of Registration into your name. After this period you will be charged a late transfer fee. Failing to transfer the registration can result

Hitch - painless compared to the UAE.

When I came here I was told of bureaucracy & endless paperwork - but it was a breeze compared to the Middle East.

One thing is for sure, they know how to charge here - I seem to have an endless stream of cash going out, with little to show! First few weeks were the worst!

Not so, you can do it all online:

ETA: That said, you may have to have a NSW Licence to register with myrta. But you might as well do that anyway, it'll save a lot of hassle.

I had a chat with RTA a few days ago, as I was wondering when to switch my QLD rego to NSW.

They told me there is a requirement for drivers to change licenses, but no such restriction on vehicles - but it's best practice to change ASAP.

I was planning to do it once I move into the apartment and both cars are here, I can go in and get a customer reference number (rather than license) when I do it.

You're missing a step smile

If you don't have an Aus licence, an RTA office will create an account for you on proof of a valid driving licence. This account number is then required to register the vehicle.

(And (in NSW) you can't get a licence until you've been there 6 months).

So if you land in NSW you can't buy a car until you've been there six months?

Yes. You need to get an account.

You cannot get a NSW licence until you've been there 6 months (hence the requirement for the account).

Took me a while to figure this out ! (I bought a car in the first 2 months of being here.)

Ummmm not sure thats right is it? You can buy a car with a UK drivers licence straight away. You just can't get a NSW licence for 6 months if on a 457 visa. If you are on a personal visa or perm res then you have to have a NSW licence.

I think that's right. Not being able to get a car for 6 months would be ridiculous even by Aus standards.

That's what I said.

You can buy a car the day you step off the plane.
You then have the legal requirement to register yourself as the new owner.
This process requires you having one of their driving licences, and entering that number on the form.
However, if you have not been in the country for 6 months you can't have one of their licences, so instead you need an RTA account.
An RTA office will create such an account if you go into their office with your (UK) licence.

Ah I see, it sounded like you were agreeing you cannot buy a car in the first 6 months because you said "Yes". I interpreted it like that so thought he might too....maybe its just me. It doesn't matter, we agree!

The other point worth mentioning here is that the RTA account has the ability to "hold" points that are then applied when you get your NSW (within the 3 year limitation or whatever it is) - So althogh you can't be given points now, you can be fined and you might find a nasty surprise when you swap to your NSW licence - maybe even an instant ban!

(I have seen people on the internet state that they have and have not had this so it seems to be luck of the draw?!)
