Hi well I recently moved out from Northern Ireland over to Sydney back at the end of October 2012 and have been settling in here for the past few months with a new job in North Sydney.

Loving it so far but finding it hard to find an active car following around the Sydney CBD or areas.

I'm currently living at Rushcutters Bay and am hoping to find a few more car events to get along to and enjoy.
I went to the Telstra 500 but apart from that there has not been much more popped up.

Unfortunately I have not had the opportunity or storage to buy a car at the present time so missing my old Silvia and a few of the cars I used to drive back home.

Anyone have any events or anything I can partake in to help satisfy my car bug and fill some of my free time?

Also just thought I would say hi and introduce myself, now I am in Sydney. Looking forward to hearing back from you all!

Hi mate, I am just up the road in Edgecliff. In terms of car stuff, yep its a bit dry. Take the opportunity to get involved in some new stuff as well while you build up to getting a motor. Sailing lessons at Rosebay? Go-karting (but its a trek out to the nearerst decent track Eastern Creek or the smaller but good Butterfly farm track...hteres an indoor one at Tempe too but not as good).

There is loads of fitness stuff to do, KRUN which is a mix of kayak and running which is supposed to be good. Have a go at surfing?

For motor stuff don't forget Melbourne is on the calendar for F1. Driving round here is a bit of a mare anyway. You need to get well out of sydney to enjoy the roads. I have a little MX-5 at the moment though contemplating a V8 of some description. I ahve got into other stuff as its just more accessible.

Mostly just enjoy the weather!

Oz motor sport has always pretty much shut down for the best part of 3 months around Christmas.

Sydney has a mass of club motor sport. Pick a mark or 2, find out where & when they meet, & go along. It wont take much effort to find a couple that do the things you want to do, or watch.

Meanwhile get into some water sports, you are living in the right place.

G'day, I'm opposite the yacht club in Rushcutters. Hoping to do a track day or two this year. Not having a car isn't an issue, I hired a crappy Hyundai and thrashed the arse off it at wakefield park down near Goulburn but planning to take the fezza on track once it's arrived early Feb.

We are back in Sydney (lane cove/artarmon) after nearly nine years in the uk. Still trying to come to terms with the used car prices and am looking for a barge to tide me over for the time being. No more bargain S classes or LS's for me!

Been a long time but I remember good drives out to wisemans ferry then back through maralya and looping through back through dural to castle hill.

Looking forward to a meet or gathering in Sydney soon!

Seems like quite a few of you around my way.

Yes I plan to get back into the gym and hopefully get out in a kayak possibly at some point would be good which will help get me back into the way of things.

I had planned to try get out to Eastern Creek at some point so I think its just like a train and bus ride to there. Karting could be fun and the other half still believes she could out drive me so maybe time to teach her a few things!

Thanks for all of your comments, some helpful advice. Everything's new to me here so always helpful to have some insiders advice so appreciate it.

I see what you mean about the used car prices, could be interesting buying something once I hopefully get somewhere with parking.

Look forward to meeting you all hopefully at one of the meetings/gatherings should be good. Thanks!

Before you go kayaking on the harbour, take a Manley ferry ride one Saturday afternoon, at about 2.00PM, so you get an idea of the harbour.

Even 40 years ago I used to get worried on a spinnaker run, when you have to give way to most sail on the harbour, from Manley back towards the city. So many fleets of racing sail all over the place, it was hard to avoid them.

I'm not too sure they all would be keeping an adequate look out for little kayaks.

Regardless, a Manley ferry run, & a walk around Manley is a good way to spend a sunny afternoon.

Although the Xmas beers didn't quite work out, perhaps we could plan something for end of Jan as it seems there a few PHers about.

I should have the TVR down here in early Feb once I move into my new place in Mosman if people fancy a drive out as the weather cools down.

Where in Mosman are you? I used to be on Queen St (near the Buena Vista hotel - good $7 steaks) until I moved to Newcastle

Keen for a drive - Bob and myself would probably drive down.

I'm a bit further out, more towards the Mercedes dealership on Military Road (which is my current landmark for turning off!).

I'm just the other side of the bridge from you. Spit Bridge, that is - Balgowlah. Don't usually get the time for a weekend day away - young family and house that needs work - but often find the time for a midweek evening pootle around Ku Ring Gai and McCarrs Creek.

Also, happy to help the OP with mountain biking, if you need a break from kayaking. Great track at Manly Dam - plenty for everyone, novice and expert...

What's Balgowlah like as a place to live? I've been looking over that way online.

Not sure what sort of place you're after, but its great for families - schools, amenities, parks, beaches - if that's what you like. Not cheap, but nowhere in this city is. Easy to get to the city for work by bus or ferry, not a long walk to Manly for ferry and pubs, mountain biking nearby, free copy of the Manly Daily delivered, feels spacious without being that far away.

Can't see us moving away - been over this way for about 9 years, Insular Peninsula and all that!

Thanks very much, appreciate it. Still exploring Sydney at the moment, and hoping to get out to eastern creek sometime. Can anyone tell me is it a train to Bankstown or Blackstown cant remember the exact name and then a bus to the track?

I was at Manly funnily enough on Saturday for the first time. Loved the atmosphere there.

Your MX-5 wouldn't be newer shape model in silver by any chance? Seen one heading through the Cross yesterday heading down towards Edgecliff.

No its a Green mark2 with a noisy induction kit but otherwise totally standard. (Actually its got an oem front splitter on it too but as its oem I don't think it counts). Sounds great through all the tunnels in Sydney haha!

Might I suggest doing something Thursday 31st January then if midweek is easier?

Meet up for a couple of drinks after work somewhere central-ish?

I'm in Balgowlah as well, if you'd like another personal recommendation!

It's perfect for me as I work in The Rocks so it's a 20 minute walk to the ferry (30 minutes slow, 17 minutes fast - plus the fast ferry has a bar on it...) and 5 minute walk the other side. It's also a 20 minute walk to the beach, pubs and restaurants of Manly, 5 minutes to shops up the road - where the bus stops are, which will mean about a 20-30 minute bus ride to North Sydney.

As a guide for rent I've got a three bedroom townhouse with a mahoosive double car garage (well, two adjoining spaces in an underground car park, wall either side so no neighbours hitting doors etc) that's a shade under $3k a month. Not too cheap but handy for mates/relatives having the 3rd bedroom...
