So in the new year I need to start looking for a new car....in fact actually the wife is pushing me to get one sooner! As its Friday I thought I would chuck it out here and see if anyone has any other ideas or thoughts on the below!

Currently I have an MX-5. Its great fun but too low for future plans(!), only two seats and doesn't pull my boat. As I see this I have three options....

1) Part-ex against a 4x4 - Least favourable as i want something relatively fun as well...
2) Buy an addiitonal 4x4 but not spend much thus keeping MX-5 - Seems good but expensive running costs as I don't really need two cars!
3) Part-ex MX-5 for Holden / HSV V8 that can tow as well....

Budget is about $15k plus the $10k of value in my MX-5... Boat is about 1600kgs I think but poss more but not much more...looking at something like these...cannot decide....then there is sportswagon versus sedan as well...!

SportsWagon

Sedan

Anyone got or had a Sports wagon? Are they as fun as the sedan? I had a go in a SSV ute, good power....

Any left field options or ideas?!

This particular one is above budget and their rarity could be a problem:

something different from a Land Cruiser:

Left field suggestions, you say?

All three of those scares the crap out of me! In blighty ....less of a problem...here.....yikes!

Towing is essential, not sure how the Audi would go....

I think it really is an additional 4x4 or a Holden / HSV V8 of some description!

Son in law has a large inboard wake board boat. He used a turbo 6 Falcon ute, them a HSV V8 to tow it, fairly long distances. The Falcon went through 3 diffs, all under warranty, but was otherwise great.

The HSV was a better vehicle all round, but with his led foot, was expensive to run.

These days they do more weekend trips to different venues, & often camp Saturday night. He now has a 3.0L turbo diesel 4X4 duel cab Navara ute to carry all the gear, & reckons it is the best so far.

My son has a Ford Bronco 3.0L diesel 4X4 duel cab [Mazda Bravo] ute which does his 80Km each way commute economically, & tows beautifully he reckons.

Both of them leap at the offer of a drive of either of my Triumphs, or the S2000, so I reckon there is a bit of an itch there with both of them which is not getting scratched by the utes, but they suit their boating life style.

And yes again.

I have one of those engines, gingered up a bit, in a little light 1100Kg Triumph TR8. After $10s of thousands spent on it, it is now reasonably reliable, & even not to fuel inefficient, if not stirred.

However the worst economy was 26.7L/100Km, & that was on a 500Km country run, albeit with some of it a bit twisty.

No if you want something to work, & keep on doing it, you can't beet a Jap turbo diesel. If you want to go on the public roads, it has got to be a yank V8, preferably an Oz built one.

HSV Avalanche. Wagon or Ute.

Ugly but brutish.

I think there are only two Avalnache wagons in Wa, seen one twice... And one advertised.

Would have loved one, but wife said no. So we got the V6 adventra instead and it is still thirsty at 13-14ltr/100k's.
That's unloaded and no towing... Hate to think what a V8 would be in fuel...

A VE SS wagon should handle the same as an SS sedan as they are on the same wheelbase.
The VE Utes and WM Statesman/Caprice are on the LWB and should handle similarly.
Errr I may have driven both! My ute handles better than my sedan er whoops gave that away! Ok I have a VE sedan and a Ute. The sedan isn't on sports suspension yet so is a bit like riding a magic carpet.
I think I have said it before, maybe avoid the HSV cars as some of the bodywork and trim prices are a bit scary if you hurt it. The mechanicals are ok as the SS generally has the same bits or if it doesn't you can raid the USA!
I think some of them are limited as to what they can tow, My ute for example can only tow 1600kg.
With the VE/WM, I would try and get something with a few luxuries on it! The WM V8 Caprice is a lot of car for the money especially secondhand. It looks like they can tow 2100kg. If you don't want the LWB version gets it smaller cousin the VE V8 Calais V (wagon or sedan). These both only come in Auto. Manual is the domain of the SS cars.
With the older cars, maybe an VY II SS wagon?? or a WL Caprice or Statesman, but the older cars are getting old now! If I picked up a pre VZ car, I would get something cheap and just mess around with it! ie a VXII SS or a Calais/Berlina.
A hidden gem is the VZ MY06 SS/SV8 or WL Caprice/Statesman with the 6 litre V8 in it. Ie the older car with the newer 6 litre engine in it. Unfortunately all the sellers realise this!
It has to tow, I assume carry 4 people, fun to drive, not over 15k or 30k depending on what it can do, anything else? I haven't mentioned the Fords yet. errrr I'm worn out! another post later.
