Good post WN and glad all is going well.

With regards to the rental did you put the application through based on the employer paying for it as opposed to being on your heads? I only say as a company funded application generally get a better outcome.

I have rented 5 times now (I think) in Perth and always got one sharpish but I would say it is quite a stressful process as demand is high with a lot of other viewers at the rental opens, you only get 15 minutes (by appointment doesn't seem to exist here) and most come up as available now so you can't plan to move in 4 weeks - this is a problem if you want to leave your current rental to move to another as basically you have to give notice without generally your next one in the bag.

It's certainly not as easy as in the UK in terms of ease, choice and process.

The absolute two key requirements to settling happily are a) happy wife, happy life & b)live as an Australian not as a Brit in Australia comparing it to England.

Personally I love it here. Would hate to go back to live in England and now understand what lifestyle means. I feel happier, more relaxed, healthier, definitely wealthier and more optimistic and positive than I did in the uk - not because I actively felt the opposite in England just I didn't realise they were the missing components.

You'll know when you've 'got it' here is when you read other PH'ers posts on the rest of the forum and laugh at how wound up they get at the littlest most irrelevant things that don't actually concern them or matter.

OP you've done rather well getting your other halve's employer to pay for all that. You've saved an absolute fortune - Mine provided a Ute for the first two weeks and that was it! However its a very small company which I like in some ways but it means they're a little more thrifty.

Regarding the wildlife, we saw a redback a couple of months ago when collecting some garden patio pots from a gumtree ad and I've seen another at work. No snakes, crocs, sharks or jellyfish so far!

There are a few small spiders occasionally in the house but my wife keeps the place spotless so they've discovered and removed pretty fast.

The weather has been quite warm lately which has taken some getting used to. On the plus side, we were in the sea on Christmas day and have been in again almost every day since. My wife was never really one for going to the beach but it's been great watching her in the water with a huge smile on her face this week.

Money has been tight for us at times, not helped by having to pay $4000 to bring the dog over in December - The same month as my wife's birthday, Christmas and a couple of bills.

On the shipping front, we used Seven Seas "Movecube" which is a bog wooden box (8ft cube) you pack yourself and they ship door-to-door. Nothing was broken and we had no extra charges to pay. Do not waste your time washing stuff in Jeyes fluid as they would have you do on the other forums! We just made sure things were clean and washed bikes down with fairy liquid and warm water. I'd use the MoveCube again without hesitation.

Overall we're very glad we made the move. We always fancied living near the coast in the UK but the cost and lack of relevant jobs made it impossible.

We went through a dip after a month where we both wondered if we made the right choice. However, now we're through that we're extremely happy.

Yesterday evening we were invited to an impromptu pizza and beer evening with the neighbours which was great. The couple over the road invited us for Christmas dinner the first time they spoke to us and a couple invited us round for drinks having met us when they collected a table we sold on ebay!

It is such a refreshing change to see public services which appear well funded, new roads being built all over, good public transport, free parking in 99% of places outside the city centre.

Food can be expensive but if you look around there are bargains in the farmers markets and at supermarkets too.

Whilst the cost of getting settled is high, I firmly believe the cost of living from 12 months onward will be lower in real terms than in the UK.

I agree with PommyGranite's comment that a happy wife is a happy life - Mine found it very difficult a month or so back but now we're through that things have never been better and we've never been happier.

I took this pic the other night and it kind of illustrates how warm things are here, for anyone looking to make the move:

What this shows is the temperature and humidity at various points around the house.

The "Sunshine" icon is the weather prediction for the next 24hrs.
The top numbers are a sensor in the shade on the patio outside.
The "Main Unit" is the master bedroom
The other is a sensor which is sat on the sideboard in the lounge

Note the time - These temperatures are at 11:49PM !

Here's our local beach (Sorrento) on a busy day:

We're only 20 minutes north of the city too - I imagine it gets quieter the further away you go.

Great to read these stories; we're moving over to Sydney from Dubai at the end of Feb so good to know some of the scare-stories are the bullst they seem. I wouldn't venture onto a general forum for all the tea in China - always seem to be populated by the bitter, extreme and twisted in society!

Unlike PH of course...

Those temps are nothing - it's down to 22c at night in the UAE at the moment but in summer it rarely drops below 35c even in the dead of night. 50c during the day is common!

I can't wait to move somewhere with weather after four years here.

Good reading, and I agree that most of the carp that is mentioned on the Forums can pretty much be ignored. We have been here since June and find Perth to be really cool

For example myself and my son snorkling yesterday for hours while my wife and daughter went to watch Mickey Mouse at the convention centre. I would concider these to be normal activities in December in Perth and not many other countries can offer the same (in my opinion).

We were lucky with our move as the company paid for everything regarding re-locating (apart from my car) and I agree that property is expencive over here but you can find places for reasonable money, we are currently in Attadale and loving it, only 2 mins from the River at Point Walter, with Freo only a ten mins drive away and the City 20 mins if I set off early enough.

Good to hear you guys are settling in as well as we are, cheers and Heppy New Year.

I'm pleased to be on the east coast (whinging pom !) as we don't usually get above 40 but still have the beaches. OK, Salaries are a bit lower but so is the cost of living. Based on quality of life, I would take Newcastle over Perth any day (but Perth over Sydney - close thing though).

Enjoy and hope things go well.

It's totally different heat though. I lived in Dubai for 10+ years and found the heat not too bad.

Here in QLD, the sun's intensity is 3x as strong and the humidity is a killer. 30-35 here is easily equal to 40-45 in Dubai's summers.

Plus I burn so much quicker here, it's crazy.

This is all great stuff to hear, I must say. I arrive next week for a 3 week stay in Perth before moving out there a month or two later with my family. I am a Brit but coming from Texas where we have lived for the last 6 years. We left the UK well behind when we came here to the US so we might have a different perspective on arrival Perth, but you are all saying the right things for my ears anyway. I am being transferred by my company so my financial experience will be more like WN's by the sound of it. Finding a decent local school which will hence dictate where we look to rent, is the biggest challenge so far. We had planned to put my boy in private school, but they are all very full, so we didn't anticipate this challenge. Hoping to make progress on that in the coming days.

That's a good post, good to hear it's all working out ok.

I quite like reading your posts/200bhp/bibbs et al as they're more realistic and balanced than the other forums you get out there..

Looking at the move in March, just looking at accommodation now- so please keep the updates coming smile
No problem. No point lying about what we are up to.

It suits some people, and not others.

Glad to hear it's working out for a lot of people though.

Now .. how about us organising a beer?
