Just had a rego demand land on the doormat for $600+ for my Mazda 6 wagon.

I was pretty shocked by this, not just at the cost but also because "Honest" John Hughes told me it wasnt due until February (Yes, I should have checked)

Given I have a $3000 bill to pay to bring the dog over from the UK, christmas and the wife's birthday I'm quite keen to reduce the Rego bill if I can.

So, is it possible to argue that the value of the car is less than they claim (using examples of vehicles currently for sale)??

Do you mean licence duty? Ie vehicle transfer ship owner fee? (Did you pay 21250 for the car?)

Otherwise "rego" is usually about 600 or so per year.

Its based on sale price not value - that's what JH have told DTI and so there's not much to argue when they pull the invoice out.

Google the calculator online - even if you drop $2k off the sale price it won't save much.

Rego is based on the weight I believe .. I know the Hilux is about $550 a year.

The sales tax (stamp duty for cars) is based on a %age of the sale cost.

Well, now I've read the document myself (rather that relying on my wife's comments on the phone yesterday afternoon) it turns out it's the vehicle transfer fee and I'd completely forgotten that it was due.

Given the lack of a "tax disc" is there any way of knowing when Rego is due?

Or if the link doesn't work :-

http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/licensing/20382.asp

and the 'Vehicle Licence Check' button.

Wonderful.

Looks like another few hundred dollars due at the end of January!
