I'm out on a scouting trip next week to hopefully seal the deal for a move to Sydney. Two days in the office then three taking a look around. I'd like to try to get a feel for the wider city in those three days so wondered if anyone had any tips on what to see and what to leave as we'll probably be back for a good while from Feb.

Ta in advance!

Sydney is a big place. You are not going to manage even 10% of it in just 3 days.

How about some qualification. Where is this office, & what do you like to do with your time, when not at the office.

EG, a brother in law lives in Gosford, as his business in in the northern suburbs, & it's a nicer trip to work.

My eldest lives in Bondi, as she doesn't cook, [likes to eat out], & does a lot of sun baking on the beach.

Years ago I lived in Fairfield, because it was close to all the Sydney motor race tracks, & easier to get to those like Bathurst from there.

All three are almost mutually exclusive, as to their advantages.

Are you specifically looking at areas with a view to moving there or are you after more of a touristy kind of overview? And when you say 'we' is that just your partner or are you bringing a family?

And as Hasbeen has mentioned already, where will your office be and what kind of times etc are you used to travelling?

Depends on what you like about city living (although city definition will be different to what you would expect in the UK). I live in the city of Lake Maquarie as I hate european style cities. If you are happy with London, Birmingham, Manchester then central Sydney is the place, however if you are more country then somewhere on Central Coast (Gosford) would give just over an hour into central Sydney by rail or car. If you are happy with 2 hours Newcastle/Lake Maquarie will give you great beaches, good surfing, good walks in countyside, cafe culture and close to the Hunter Valley wine region, although it has an industrial past it has transcended that into a great place to live (may be too far from central Sydney though).

Office is in North Sydney; it's my wife, me and an 11 month visiting. Wife has lived in and visited Sydney plenty of times so knows it inside out and is very comfortable with the move.

Just wondering if there's a few day or half day things to do that will give me a feel for the place. Plenty of time to see it all when we move in Feb, which is 90% probs.

To me at least, Sydney is all about the harbour and beaches - that's not to say there's not loads of other things away from said waterways, it's just that for me you could pretty much be in any other city and find a lot of those things anyway. So with that in mind...:

Personally one of the best touristy things you can do in Sydney (and it's also fairly cheap...) is to just catch the Manly Ferry over to Manly, have a mooch around - maybe some lunch or a pint. Best way to see the harbour short of having your own boat!

Another thing that a lot of people don't know about is to climb the South East Pylon of the Harbour Bridge - same views (effectively) as the Bridge Climb but only costs $15!

Or, get to Bondi for breakfast. From there get a bus to Watson's Bay (lunch at Doyle's, very touristy!), from Watson's Bay you can get a ferry back to Circular Quay.

Conversly you could flip that, get a train to Martin Place, walk down through the Botanic Gardens and around to the Opera House. From there you could go on into the Rocks for a look around (better on a Friday or weekend as there's more stuff going on - lots of pop-ups and the like happening at the moment. PS: I work in the Rocks...) And from then on you could catch a ferry to either Manly or Watson's Bay etc...

Thanks for the comments - just got back to Dubai.

Ended up spending four days in the office so just had the weekend to get to grips with the city. Managed lunch in Manly and a flying visit through some of the other Northern Beaches places, the Rocks, Botanical Gardens, went to a stand-up comedy gig in the Opera House, couple of ferries, trains and buses and a fair bit of driving. Lots and lots of drinking.

Loved the place. Will be there full time in Feb/March.
