There seems to be a lot of conflicting information on the internet about the rules about transfers of rego.

As I understand it, I have 3 months to transfer the rego, then I have to complete the process in NSW and then apply for refund in QLD.

Does anyone have any tips/pointers/clarifications?

Does the transfer cost any money (apart from paying for the CTP/Rego), i.e. there's no stamp duty or transfer fees, or refund charges etc?

What you can do (and I have done in the past) is get the car unregistered from interstate. You can usually knock a fair bit off the price.

You have to get a blue slip inspection done anyway to rego it in NSW whether you buy it registered or unregistered.

You can tell the seller that they can get a refund on it straightaway and they will jump at it.

I think Mattt is relocating as opposed to purchasing an interstate car.

Correct, blue slip ($57), green slip(IRO $500) and normal rego costs. I think you'll have to send the plates back to QLD road people whoever they may be and they'll give you a refund. Probably.

My apologies.

The advice from Mr Bot is spot on in that case.

If it's a normal production car no worries, if it is an ICV ( kit car ) you are in for a whole new world of pain because it will need to be re-engineered to current requirements under most circumstances.

You will requite a NSW roadworthy certificate, & remember they do it annually.

Make sure you dont let the rego run out before you do it, that can add complications. This is particularly important with modified cars that have engineer approval for compliance. Depends on the state too.

My son bought the TR8 for me in Melbourne, when he was down there doing a course. He had to transfer the registration to his name when it was going to run out before he brought it home to me in Qld.

He let the rego run out before giving me the paperwork. As the rego had expired Queensland would not accept the Victorian compliance, & I had to get it done again in Qld, to be able to register it. This cost $1000 that I would rather not have spent unnecessarily.

This is a concept I can't get my head around. A friend of mine recently moved from NSW to ACT and it cost $1,000 to re-register their old Territory.

They really can tax and complicate so much in this country!
