Road biking and classic car racing in / near Perth
Discussion
Heading out to Oz in early 2013. What is the craic with road biking out there? are there any decent hills within striking distance of Perth? I love getting 40-60 miles under the wheels at weekends and squeeze in a bit through the week, then I like a blast in my 3.2 Carrera! (which I am thinking I will probably bring to Oz).
A few q's:
- how do car drivers treat cyclists (in France it's great, UK dodgy, many try to knock you off they go so f***ing close!)
- What are road surfaces like (can't be worse than UK!)
- Are there any groups who ride at a decent pace without killing me (ie ave 18-21mph) and only interested in racing?
- What is the topography like?
- Is it popular, or a bit left-field? (No predictable anti-cycling answers here pls!)
On to the 2nd part of the q - I have just got back home from a great little classic car racing day at castle Combe, grids of 20+ Jags, Healey 3000's, with my 4 y.o. son. Not quite Goodwood Revival, but great all the same and a great intro to car racing for my little boy. Are we going to be able to do this sort of thing in WA?

Cycling seems to be pretty big here in Perth, there are dedicated cycle lanes everywhere and the CBD and surrounding suberbs are fairly flat.
Loads of people cycle into work very early with small and large groups going fast and reasonably well passed.
Dont know about and decent twisty roads as I have not really explored much, only been here four months.
It is nice here but the summer is coming and it is going to be hot!!!!

As above, the cycle routes seem to be very good and I'm looking forward to when my bike arrives later in the month.
The roads are generally pretty good and most are nice and wide, often with a painted line 3-4ft from the dege. The line is there to mark the edge of the road clearly at night but it doubles as an informal cycle lane.
I saw a cycle race in progress on the roads around us at the weekend. Seemed pretty well attended and well organised with lots of marshalls and drinks at junctions and roundabouts.
There was a classic car club meet in a car park in Mindarie (a northern suburb) a few weeks back. The wife and I love classic cars so we went along. There were 2 MGs, a corvette and an E-Type there
I've heard adverts on the radio for a modified car show but I cant find anything for the more mature motorist! (25 and over). I'd be interested to hear if anyone has knowledge of a Perth area classic car show.

They should all give you a clue as to what is going on with motorsport around Perth. Lots of motoring forums in Australia so keep an eye on the various marque and scene forums and club websites.
I can be found at Barbagallo most tuning days and will be competing in the full rallysprint series.
I enjoy cycling to. I live in Rockingham and my regular routes can take me 20 odd KMS without having to leave proper cycle paths and go on the road.

Good to hear cycling is big, guess it gets a bit sweaty in the summer - have to go a bot quicker to get a breeze on the browLoads of people cycle into work very early with small and large groups going fast and reasonably well passed.
