Anyone know what it's like to live there?

The sand flies used to have a camp up in the narrows, [the mangrove lined water way between the mainland & Curtis island], where they took unsuspecting tourists, to devour them at their leisure. I think they're a bit better controlled these days.

Used to be a great place to live when it was a bit smaller, & should have much better facilities today. The economy is roaring along, but any fall off in coal mining could slow it down a bit.

The harbour is quite large, & offers great sailing, & fishing, & the previously mentioned narrows are full of crabs.

There are some great bits of the great Barrier Reef about 30 miles out in water so clear you can see your anchor on the bottom in 60Ft of water.

As you may gather it's a boaties paradise, with miles of untouched coastline both north & south. If you're not too adventurous there are a number of resorts in the area, island & mainland.

It is also, along with Rockhampton, in the middle of nowhere. They are a long way from anywhere else.

The coast & the hinterland for a long way is low, & driving is a bit boring. You can drive a long way without finding a corner that can't be easily taken at above the speed limit.

It is still one part of Oz where you would not be worried about your kids walking home from a friends at midnight.

I spent a couple of cyclone seasons there, & loved the place, but even more the people.

Gladstone can be a cultural wasteland...
