I'm making the move to Perth on the 10th of Sept. Trying to sort out as much as I can before I get out. I'm working in civil engineering (site based, roads and railway work) the last 5 years and looking to get work in the mines or if the pay is right work in the city.

Any recommendations on recruitment agency’s to use, I'm heading out on a 12 month holiday/visa so the plan is get set with a company and see if they good to work for then get my sponsorship from them.

Whats the car/motorbike scene like out in Perth? Wouldnt mind a nice ute V8!!

I seem to recall when getting my work Visa earlier this year that the conditions stated you had to be outside the country when you applied for the Visa, and couldn't re-enter until the Visa had been approved.

btw, my work (457) Visa took 2 weeks, although the guideline was 6-8

There are onshore and offshore visas - costs/timescales vary between them.

Under 30 I take it?

Go east coast instead. Perth is like a part of Essex now hehe

There are a lot of northerners here.

Just get a BMW x5 with a Premier league style number plate "MUFC 4 LYF" or similar, move to Joondalup and moan to the other ex-pats there about the local fish and chips as they don't do curry sauce or mushy peas.

You'll fit right in.

(it's a joke - don't take offence)

Good luck. A nice spec'ed v8 ute will set you back about $40k new.

I got the 417 visa as thats what the friends out there recommended. I'm under 30 so didnt want the head out and be stuck to the one company through my visa, at least now I can try out working for the company and see if I like them, if not I can move on then.

Looking forward to the move now, just e-mailing recruitment companies to get the ball rolling before the move.

Is there many meet ups in the Perth area or any track days at Barbagallo Raceway? Any of ye tried the V8 racing, I seen that you can do 5 laps for $250, could be worth a shot.

Don't hold your breath, they are useless.

I spend 6 weeks getting the run around (interviews that are basically registration) until I did the leg work myself.

I'm Aussie too, and the wife is from Surrey.

(But most the British we know are from North of Watford)

we arrived on Saturday and so far so good. The weather in Perth this week has been like late October in the UK but with more wind!

Its going to take a while to stop looking up every time I hear a V8 though - Several times I've looked expecting a muscle car but seen a family saloon - normally looking like a vauxhall omega and driven by a chap under 25.

took the train into the city and it was free to park, cheap, clean and spacious. Very impressed.

car shopping tomorrow.

Vodaphone do a pre paid similar only deal which allows calls to the UK for just $1 per call.

You chose a cr@p week to arrive regarding the weather! We have noticed it at work. Think monday night was a bit average. Wait a few days and it will be back to its normal pleasant self.

Good luck with the car hunting, Take one of those V8 family saloons for a spin!!

The flight isn't too long to go now. Should be hitting 40 deg soon enough!!

Is the mining slowing down as much as people are saying? I was hoping to get work out in them but that could be a bit of fun trying to get work in them now with all the negative talk going on.
