Just browsing John Hughes website looking at a few car options and unlike the UK, there dont seem to be many Auto diesel hatchbacks/wagons available.

I've always had petrol cars in the UK because I only do about 4000 miles a year. However, I can see myself doing a lot more in WA so diesel would surely be the sensible option?

So why are they so hard to find?

The Diesel car market in Australia as a whole is only just starting to get going
The Hyundai i30 was the first diesel car to sell in large numbers and the Holden commodore is starting to sell also
The market for diesels here are the big 4wds so none of the car makers from Europe exported the diesel models to us

Fair point OP! I never thought that monster 6L utes were just silly and a diesel lump would make more sense!!

Saying that, it would help if Derv wasn't so damn expensive...

If you want economy, get a motorbike. Oh wait... haven't seen you out & about lately?

Diesel is for trucks and 4x4s. And most off-roaders prefer a manual.

I wouldn't bother personally. I'm not a fan (even though I drove one for a few years).

Petrol auto if I can.

What is the cost of petrol / Diesel in WA ?

Perhaps I'm getting old but having spent the last 6 months running a Lexus GS300 Auto, I'd really like another auto - But maybe not a 19MPG petrol like the Lexus!

I drive company pool cars occasionally which are a mix of Auto and manuals. I jump from one to another without fuss but I do like a good Auto.

1.34 vs 1.41 in petrols favour (and 8c off if you shop in the right place).

And I prefer auto's here in the city, due to all the stop/start traffic lights.

Dunno what MPG the Hilux gets, it just gets filled when it's empty.

We haven't taken to diesel cars here in Oz, perhaps it's greedy car companies, but the premium for a diesel make the total package not competitive here.

On the other hand, that are very popular in the 4WD & ute market. My son was just boasting the other day that he is getting into the 7L/100Km area in his lumpy great Ford Ranger crew cab thing.

At least this means we don't get stinky hands fueling up our little shopping trolleys.

I think Aussies associate diesels with trucks, old Patrols and tractors.

As already pointed out, diesel sales are on the way up... perhaps it's a WA thing.

http://yahoo.carsales.com.au/news/2012/diesels-on-...

Most of the Europeans are bringing in diesel auto, I guess it depends on what you want to spend and where you want to get it from (ie.. outside of WA).

BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Jaguar all have diesel autos.... Focus and Mondeo Diesel are also available in auto.

Since when did they start selling a diesel Commodore? Are you thinking of something else?

The diesel commodore has been on the market for 2 maybe 3 years now, I have driven the ute and it is quite nice to drive and you do not notice that it is diesel

I think you're mistaken. There is no diesel Holden Commodore.

No Diesel Commodore, I have a ute and it only comes in Petrol and Gas. There is a Diesel Cruze which is the medium sized car.
I do agree, the ute is very nice to drive!

Ah marketing, Include a D in the makeup of the car to make it look like a diesel. Paint the badge green too!
SIDI = Spark ignition Direct Injection.

Quote from that article.
"Both engines are all-alloy (with iron bore liners), DOHC and undersquare. Both run relatively high compression: the 3.0 litre at 11.7:1, the 3.6 litre, 11.3:1, but each are perfectly happy with 91 RON fuel."

As Moto says, no Diesel.

Go to:

Www.carsales.com.au>used car search>Holden>>commodore>fuel type : you'll see there is no diesel option.
