4wd hire in Darwin
Discussion
where are you going?
if your planning Kakadu - Kakadon't. I live here and Litchfield is far superior, free and you don't need a 4wd.
If your travelling anywhere else, I would personally recommend Britz, thrifty or hertz they have loads of 4wd but up here they are expensive, About $180 a day whereas you can get a 2wd Barina for $27 a day. There are smaller companies but they are not maintained as well.

Thanks for that. I'm planning on 3 days driving around Litchfield stopping at some of the campsites and there's a couple of 4wd only tracks on the route that I'd like to trundle along.
I was wondering if there were any more specialist companies than Britz, Avis etc but couldn't find anything. I don't think $180 is too bad when you see the price for hotel rooms in darwin

there are plenty of decent hotels but no room, When are you coming up?
You can easily do Litchfield in a day from Darwin, the only thing you cannot see from a sealed road is the lost city but its not that great. Everything else is accessible by sealed bitumen roads
I often do a day trip from the city in the Porsche. Its only 90 minutes.

For anyone interested in doing a trip to Darwin, here's a brief update.
We hired a 4wd Hilux camper from bargain car rental. As the name suggests they were cheap but even so, we weren't expecting it to be quite so poor.
Mechanically it was fine as you'd expect from a Hilux but it had a few operational issues such as no wooden support for the fold out bit of the double bed so it was single beds only and we had to find a camping store en route to pick up a gas hose to connect the tanks to the stove as it was missing when we went to set up camp on the first night.
However, we then found whilst setting up camp ont he second night that one of the gas cannisters was empty and the other had been threaded so no cooking facilites other than an electric toaster.
This put an end to our wilderness camping and we stayed in some reasonably OK camping sites with basic but good facilities. One was the Safari Camping Ground in Litchfied which had a cafe nearby and is in the heart of the Litchfield Park.
James280779 gave us a great itinerary so a big PH thumbs up
On the list of must do's is Berry Springs and Cascade falls plus a sunset dinner cruise in darwin Harbour. Mindel markets was ok but the sunset from the beach was pretty spectacular.
We managed to head out to Blythe Homestead which is a pretty sorry place in the middle of nowhere but there's a couple of river/creek crossings to keep it interesting and it's fun to just get off the tarmac and do a bit of light off roading.
Weather this time of year was really good, 35 degrees every day and not much humidity, plus being the end of th dry there's no salties in the popular swimming holes of Litchfield, although public disclaimer, check first before just assuming it's safe. I found a nice n shiny spent 303 case on the bank of a lovely looking hole and I doubt they'd been shooting at ducks!

I did try to warn you about those dodgy car rentals lol - up here in the NT they seem to get away with anything. Last year over 2/3 of the Wicked campers were grounded after a spot check found them to be unsafe to be rented out!!
The .303 - there are no Salty Crocs this time of year, the water is far too low- It also illegal to shoot salties and most people know that - I have only heard of one incident in last three years! Its seriously frowned upon by locals, however it is likely to be pigging. Loads of wild boar around that area and a water hole is a good place to get them.
